First Bank Gateway: Standard Chartered becomes an authorised HKDAP distributor.

Full-Stack Role: The bank supports issuance, reserves and distribution.

Q4 Plans: Tokenized fund settlement and treasury pilots are planned.

Institutional Access: Beta use remains limited to eligible clients.

Distribution, Not Issuance, Was the Missing Link

Anchorpoint appointed Standard Chartered as an authorized distributor of HKDAP following the stablecoin’s Beta Access launch on August 12. While crypto-native exchanges HashKey and OSL were the first to distribute the token, Standard Chartered gives HKDAP its first direct channel into mainstream commercial banking.

A regulated stablecoin on Ethereum means very little if corporate treasurers can’t interact with it inside their daily workflow. A crypto exchange requires separate onboarding, liquidity management, and compliance stacks. Integrating HKDAP directly into an established corporate banking relationship bridges the gap between public blockchains and corporate balance sheets.

Standard Chartered Now Controls HKDAP’s Core Stack

The appointment deepens Standard Chartered’s structural dominance over HKDAP. Anchorpoint operates as a Standard Chartered Hong Kong subsidiary, with the bank serving as its largest shareholder alongside joint-venture partners HKT and Animoca Brands.

Standard Chartered’s footprint now spans four critical layers:

Issuer Ownership: Majority equity holder in Anchorpoint Financial (licensed under HKMA FRS01).

Reserve Management: Manager and custodian for all non-digital reserve assets.

Trustee Operations: Standard Chartered Trustee holds reserve assets in legal trust for token holders.

Client Distribution: Primary bank gateway for corporate minting, redemption, and transfer workflows.

This end-to-end integration eliminates external friction when converting fiat into HKDAP. However, it also concentrates early operational risk within a single banking group, a factor institutional risk committees will evaluate closely.

Tokenized Funds Need a Tokenized Cash Leg

The most concrete application on Standard Chartered’s Q4 roadmap is settling tokenized money-market funds. Today, purchasing tokenized fund units often creates a timing mismatch: ownership updates on-chain in seconds, but cash still moves through standard wire cut-off times and legacy clearing houses.

HKDAP serves as the 24/7 cash leg. Institutional investors can acquire HKDAP through Standard Chartered, execute on-chain subscriptions instantly, and receive redemption payouts directly in HKDAP, enabling true atomic, off-hours settlement.

Beyond fund settlement, the bank plans to use HKDAP to move liquidity internally across its global branch network outside conventional banking hours, alongside pilot programs for 24/7 cross-border trade settlements.

HKDAP vs. Tokenized Bank Deposits

Corporate treasurers must distinguish between HKDAP and emerging tokenized deposit models:

HKDAP Stablecoin: Issued by Anchorpoint, backed 1:1 by liquid reserves held in a segregated trust. It pays no interest, is not legal tender, and is not covered by standard bank deposit protection. It functions strictly as a high-velocity settlement asset.

Tokenized Deposit: A direct liability on a commercial bank’s balance sheet, representing digitized bank deposits that maintain standard deposit protections and yield capabilities.

Building a Multi-Currency Settlement Gateway

This rollout builds on Standard Chartered’s institutional USDC minting and redemption gateway launched via its Dubai (DIFC) entity in July. Rather than treating HKDAP as an isolated project, the bank is quietly constructing a multi-currency, multi-jurisdictional digital asset infrastructure.

While USDC supplies global dollar liquidity, HKDAP offers a regulated settlement vehicle within Hong Kong’s emerging legal framework. Standard Chartered provides the underlying banking, compliance, and fiat conversion rails for both.

From Infrastructure Pilot to Commercial Scale

Despite the high-profile banking backing, HKDAP remains in its infancy. Anchorpoint’s transparency dashboard reported roughly 522,000 HKDAP in circulation and $658,160 in total volume as of August 19, backed by a reserve balance of 1.62 million HKD.

The infrastructure is officially live, but commercial adoption has yet to be proven. The real metrics to watch in Q4 will be confirmed asset manager partnerships, real subscription volumes, conversion spreads, and third-party reserve attestations once full public launch approaches in late 2026.
