SNK Corporation officially dissolved wholly owned subsidiary SNK Entertainment. The dissolution took effect on Aug. 20, 2026, according to a notice that was published in Japan’s government gazette. SNK Entertainment had been largely inactive for several years after most of its operations were transferred back to parent company SNK.
SNK Entertainment was publicly launched in February of 2016 with a mandate to expand the use of SNK’s intellectual property across games, digital content, licensing, collaborations and merchandise. Its portfolio touched franchises including The King of Fighters, Metal Slug, Fatal Fury and Samurai Shodown. Why SNK Entertainment was dissolved
The subsidiary’s role changed significantly in 2022. SNK transferred much of its game and digital content development, sales, marketing and licensing operations from SNK Entertainment to the parent company through an absorption-type corporate split. The transfer was scheduled to take effect on July 31, 2022, and effectively removed most of the subsidiary’s core functions.
GameBiz reported that SNK Entertainment effectively remained dormant after the restructuring, meaning its dissolution is expected to have little impact on SNK’s day-to-day operations.SNK continues investing in new games
In May, SNK announced plans to bring newly established VS Studio SNK into the group as a consolidated subsidiary. The Tokyo-based studio is led by former Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada, who spent more than three decades at Namco and Bandai Namco before departing the company.
SNK said VS Studio will collaborate with the company on game software development to strengthen its development capabilities.
The publisher has also continued investing in its established franchises. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves has received a second season of downloadable content in 2026, while SNK launched a Metal Slug 30th Anniversary Project in April that includes plans for a new game.
The closure of SNK Entertainment therefore seems less like a strategic retreat and more like the final step in a restructuring that began four years ago.
