In France, the crypto threat no longer stops at the screens. In the Somme, a young couple suffered three home invasions for cryptos they claim never owned. The origin of this nightmare: compromised personal data, exploited by criminals convinced they would find a crypto wallet at their victims’ homes. Recruitment of executors, violence, extortion: the case reveals how a digital leak can lead to a physical attack. After the verdict from the Amiens court, the couple now considers a radical decision: selling their house to flee.

The ordeal of a young agriculture professional and a banking administration executive, both in their twenties, begins on June 24 in the town of Montdidier, in the Somme, while physical assaults have already yielded over 30 million dollars this year. Indeed, a first group of intruders attempted to force their home before fleeing due to the dogs’ reactions. On June 26, 48 hours later, a second team entered their residence with unparalleled violence. This group liquidated one owner before beating the other severely.

Through a terrible staging, the attackers filmed the scene live via the Snapchat application to put pressure on the two victims. They then demanded the transfer of their crypto wallets. However, faced with the couple’s total incomprehension and inability to provide any private key, the assailants realize their strategic error and retreat. Despite the installation of a sophisticated alarm system by the owners to ensure their protection, a third intrusion occurs on July 17. This time, it is cut short thanks to the siren activation.

Such relentless determination finds its explanation in an upstream security breach beyond the two victims’ control. It should be noted that the couple had purchased this house two years earlier, unaware that this property belonged to a wealthy retired couple.

Thus, tax information as well as the exact address of the previous owners were hacked and revealed on the dark web, as stated by the defense lawyer, Maître Giuseppina Marras. The intruders relied on outdated data, convinced they were targeting holders of fortunes and crypto wallets. No longer safe on their property, the couple has now decided to sell the house, information disclosed by their lawyer on August 11 at the hearing, considering the trauma caused.

To assess the violence of the case pending before the Amiens court, the chronology of events suffered by this couple can be summarized in four key phases :

June 24 : first nighttime intrusion attempt thwarted by the couple’s dogs ;

June 26 : extreme violence, occupants tied up, the beating filmed live on Snapchat, and attackers fleeing after realizing the wrong target ;

July 17 : third break-in attempt repelled thanks to the installed security alarm ;

August 7 : arrest of suspects by the gendarmerie thanks to cross-referencing videos, phone tracking, and DNA trace.

Criminal subcontracting networks recruited on messaging apps

The swift handling of the investigation by the Montdidier gendarmerie research brigade facilitated the arrest of two individuals on August 7. This arrest reveals the amateurism and decentralized logistics of these attacks. Moreover, the cross-checking of surveillance footage, telephone tracking, and a DNA fingerprint found on a toll ticket on highway A1 allowed the gendarmes to identify the attackers. Before the Amiens criminal court, the first defendant, a man in his twenties, explained his recruitment via the encrypted messaging app Telegram. His role was exclusively to break down the door, in exchange for a promised payment ranging from 17,000 to 34,600 dollars.

Additionally, he justifies his actions by a desperate financial situation and claims to want to repay a debt of 4,600 dollars accumulated by his mother, who faced eviction. As for the second defendant, a 21-year-old VTC driver residing in the Paris region, he admitted having received 346 dollars for transporting four men to the scene, a car in which the police seized a crowbar, balaclavas, and cable ties.

Such an operating mode informs about the emergence of a new opportunistic mercenarism where anonymous principals exploit the precariousness of youth to carry out risky and illegal tasks. By entrusting this failed break-in to intermediaries recruited on social networks, the masterminds of such operations hide behind various layers of anonymity by sending novices. The speed with which profiles with no criminal record descend into this spiral of extreme violence for a few thousand dollars shows the growing porousness between petty urban delinquency and organized cybercrime networks.

The judicial response to the growing threat of physical assaults linked to cryptos

Before defendants with clean criminal records pleading greed-driven behavior and lack of judgment, the Amiens criminal court decided this case firmly on August 11 because of the seriousness of the facts.

The 20-year-old defendant was sentenced to three years in prison, including 18 months suspended. The rest, 18 months, is a firm detention. As for the 21-year-old driver, he received 18 months in prison, including nine months suspended and nine months firm. Both defendants are also banned from the Somme department for three years. Such a judgment shows the justice system’s will to severely and strictly punish logistical complicity in this type of violent extortion, even when the defendants are not its direct initiators.

In terms of foresight, such a tragedy reveals the significant collateral risks created by personal data leaks in this highly digitalized period. While the Web3 ecosystem commits colossal efforts to the cryptographic security of users’ wallets, the crucial vulnerability remains the human element and the tracking of physical identities linked to presumptions of wealth. As long as hacked tax or banking databases circulate freely on the dark web, the risk of wrong targeting and blind violence will remain a systemic threat.
