Gemini

Google’s biggest hardware event of the year happens this evening, and while the chip inside the new phone is genuinely notable, the more consequential story is what Google is asking that chip to run.

What’s Expected Today

Google’s Made by Google 2026 event is set for 6 p.m. ET in New York City, where the company is widely expected to unveil the Pixel 11 lineup alongside a new Pixel Watch 5. Leaks point to a Tensor G6 chip built on a 2nm process — a meaningful jump that would put Google ahead of Qualcomm and MediaTek, both still shipping 3nm designs. If the leaks hold, it would be the most significant chipset generational leap in Pixel history.

The Real Headline: Gemini Running Locally

The chip upgrade matters mainly because of what it’s built to support. Leaked marketing materials describe a feature called Gemini Intelligence built directly into the new hardware, designed to handle multi-step tasks and interpret visual context on-device rather than routing every request to the cloud. Google is also expected to introduce a new “Pixel Glow” notification LED that lights up while Gemini is actively processing a request — a small but telling design choice that signals how central always-available AI has become to the phone’s identity, rather than being one app among many.

On-device processing isn’t just a speed feature. Keeping more AI reasoning local reduces dependence on network connectivity and cuts down on the data that has to leave the device to be processed, which matters both for latency and for privacy-conscious users increasingly aware of how much of their phone activity gets sent to remote servers.

Why Google Needs This Launch to Land

This event carries more weight than a typical annual hardware refresh. It’s Google’s first major public showcase since the company’s DeepMind leadership reshuffle, in which CEO Demis Hassabis stepped back from day-to-day operations to become Alphabet’s chief scientist, handing daily control of Gemini to CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu — see our coverage of that leadership shakeup for the full story. A smooth, well-received Pixel 11 launch, with genuinely useful on-device Gemini features, is an early real-world signal of whether that reorganization is translating research into shipped product faster, exactly as Google said it would when announcing the change.

The Broader On-Device AI Trend

Google isn’t alone in pushing capable AI onto local hardware rather than the cloud. Meta recently open-sourced a 30-billion-parameter agent model designed to run entirely on a single consumer GPU, arguing that distributed, local AI is a better long-term direction than centralized cloud-only systems — a philosophy we covered in our look at Meta’s Muse Glimmer release. Apple and Samsung have made similar on-device pushes with their own flagship devices this year. The pattern across the industry is consistent: as cloud AI infrastructure costs keep climbing, running more inference directly on consumer hardware is becoming a genuine competitive differentiator, not just a nice-to-have.

What to Watch For at the Event

Beyond the headline chip and camera specs, watch for how much of Gemini Intelligence’s most impressive functionality actually runs offline versus how much still quietly depends on a cloud connection — a gap that’s historically been wider than marketing materials suggest at launch events across the industry. Also worth watching: pricing, since a 2nm chip and expanded on-device AI compute typically carry real cost, and how Google positions the Pixel 11 against Apple’s and Samsung’s own AI-forward flagships will shape the smartphone AI narrative heading into the holiday shopping season.
