If you have been thinking about investing in stocks but have no idea where to start, the good news is that you no longer need to walk into a stockbroking firm or know someone on the trading floor.
A handful of apps have made it possible to buy shares in Nigerian and international companies from your phone in minutes. The bad news is that not all of them are built the same, and picking the wrong one can cost you more than you bargained for in fees, poor customer service, or limited access.

Here are five stock investment platforms available to Nigerians, what they offer and who they may be best suited for.

1. Bamboo

Bamboo is one of the most popular investment apps among young Nigerians looking to invest in the US stock market. It allows users to buy shares in American companies like Apple, Tesla, Netflix, and Amazon directly from Nigeria, using either naira or dollars.
The app is user-friendly and easy to navigate, providing a straightforward experience that doesn’t overwhelm new investors with unnecessary complexity.
Bamboo stands out for its accessibility. You don’t need a large sum of money to start investing; with fractional shares, you can own a portion of a company even if you can’t afford a full share. Additionally, Bamboo is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission in Nigeria, which is important when choosing a trustworthy platform for your investments.

The platform has had its share of withdrawal delays in the past, which frustrated users who needed to access their funds quickly. That is worth knowing going in. But for someone who wants a long-term passive investment in the US market without the complexity of setting up an international brokerage account, Bamboo remains one of the strongest options available.
Best for: Nigerians who want to invest in US stocks with naira.

2. Trove

Trove gives you access to both the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) and US markets from one app, which is its clearest advantage over some competitors. If you want to hold shares in Dangote Cement and Apple in the same portfolio, Trove makes that possible without switching platforms.
The app has a feature called Vault that lets users save in dollars, which has been useful for Nigerians trying to hedge against naira depreciation without necessarily wanting to be fully invested in stocks at all times. Trove is also SEC-regulated and backed by SEC-licensed broker Meristem Securities.

The interface is more detailed than Bamboo’s, which some users appreciate, while others find it a bit intimidating at first. Some user reviews have mentioned complaints about customer service response times, and the app has experienced occasional downtime during peak traffic periods. However, its dual-market access to Nigeria and the US makes it one of the more versatile options available.
Best for: Investors who want both Nigerian and US stocks in one place.

3. Hisa (formerly Chaka)

Hisa (formerly Chaka) was one of the first Nigerian platforms to receive SEC approval for international stock trading, and it has built a reputation for reliability and straightforwardness. It gives users access to US stocks and ETFs, as well as Nigerian equities, and its registration process is notably faster than that of some competitors.
Where Hisa earns points is in transparency. The fee structure is clearly laid out, and the platform does not bury important information in fine print. It also has a dollar wallet feature that lets you fund your account in dollars and avoid some of the naira conversion headaches that come with other platforms.

The app is not the flashiest on this list, and the interface could use a refresh. But if you are prioritising reliability and regulatory standing over aesthetics, Hisa is a solid choice. It is particularly popular among users who have been burned by less regulated platforms in the past and want something with a clear compliance track record.
Best for: Investors who prioritise regulatory compliance and fee transparency.

4. Afrinvest 2.0

Afrinvest is one of Nigeria’s oldest and most established investment banking and research firms, and its app brings that institutional credibility into a mobile format. If the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) is your primary focus, Afrinvest 2.0 is worth serious attention.
The app gives you access to equities on the NGX, fixed income products, and mutual funds, a broader product range than most of the newer apps on this list. It also comes with access to Afrinvest’s research reports, which is a genuine advantage for anyone who wants to make informed decisions about Nigerian stocks rather than guessing.
Afrinvest 2.0 is designed for investors who have some familiarity with capital markets. Unlike Bamboo or Trove, it offers less guidance, which may be challenging for those who are completely new to investing. As a result, the variety of products available can feel overwhelming for beginners.

But for someone ready to take Nigerian equities seriously, having institutional-grade research built into the same platform where you execute trades is a meaningful edge.
Best for: Investors focused on the Nigerian stock market who want research alongside trading

5. Meritrade

Meritrade is a stockbroking platform backed by Meristem Securities, one of the most respected names in Nigerian capital markets. It focuses on Nigerian equities and gives users direct access to the NGX, with a clean interface that makes buying and selling shares in local companies reasonably straightforward.
The platform is designed for users who are serious about the Nigerian market; it is not trying to be everything to everyone. You will not find US stocks here, but what you will find is a reliable, regulated environment for trading Nigerian equities with the backing of a firm that has been operating in the space for years.
Meritrade also has a feature that allows users to apply for initial public offerings directly through the app, which is useful when new companies list on the NGX and you want to get in early. The customer service is generally more responsive than some of the newer platforms, which reflects the institutional backing behind it.

Best for: Investors who want a trusted, established platform for Nigerian stocks only.
Please keep in mind the following before making a selection: all five platforms listed are regulated, which is a crucial factor to consider before investing your money. Once you have verified regulation, your choice should be based on what you truly want to invest in.
Afrinvest 2.0 or Meritrade may be more suitable if your focus is Nigerian equities. For exposure to U.S. markets, consider using Bamboo or Hisa. If you’re looking for a platform that offers both, Trove is worth considering. While none of these options will make you rich overnight, they all provide a solid starting point for your investment journey.
