In a decisive move, Minnesota has implemented a comprehensive ban on virtual currency kiosks statewide, effectively halting the operation of all crypto ATMs. This legislation, referred to as SF 3868, was endorsed by Governor Tim Walz and became effective from Saturday, disallowing companies from establishing or maintaining these machines within the state.

Current operators of crypto ATMs must deactivate their machines immediately. They are given until December 31 to remove them entirely from visible or public spaces. Non-compliance will result in a breach of state law.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce voiced significant concerns regarding the risks posed by crypto ATMs, citing them as frequent avenues for scams. Officials highlighted the growing trend of fraudulent emergencies that pressure individuals into transferring funds.

Between 2023 and 2025, local residents experienced a loss of nearly $1 million due to scams involving crypto ATMs. Additionally, in 2025 alone, the FBI recorded more than $151 million in losses associated with crypto-related fraud. These scams have predominantly affected older citizens.

Minnesota’s decision aligns with a broader national initiative as other states take steps to regulate crypto ATMs. Tennessee has already initiated a full ban, and Georgia has set transaction limits and restrictions. Meanwhile, legislative proposals in Delaware and New Jersey propose varying levels of control over these machines.
