Erin West did not send a strongly worded letter to the Nigerian authorities about the “Yahoo boy”. She bought a ticket and flew to Nigeria.
The former US prosecutor, who built her career prosecuting cybercrime cases in the United States, travelled to Nigeria to physically track down a suspect she believed was running a sex extortion scheme targeting teenagers. She found him. She confronted him on a video call. She told Nigerian authorities everything she knew. And the suspect, the “Yahoo boy”, is still free.
The story, which West shared in a video posted online, has since gone viral, and it raises uncomfortable questions about the “Yahoo” culture and what happens after foreign investigators do the work that local authorities are supposed to do.
The scheme West was investigating is called sextortion. It works like this: the fraudster creates a fake online profile, in this case, posing as a teenage girl, befriends a young male victim, convinces him to send explicit images, and then uses those images to extort money. The victims are typically teenagers. The consequences, when the blackmail does not stop, can be fatal. West cited at least 60 suicides linked to these crimes globally.

Her team traced the “Yahoo boy” through a phone number connected to the alleged crimes. A professor helped link that number to bank accounts and other records, which eventually led them to a name, a location, and an address in Nigeria. They visited the address. Nobody was home. With only 12 hours left before they had to leave the country, they reached him on a video call.

“You were pretending to be a teenage girl,” West told the suspect “Yahoo boy”, directly on the call. “You got him to send explicit images, and then you blackmailed him.”
She did not let him pretend he did not know why she was calling. She told him she had met with the EFCC and the Ministry of Justice. She told him she knew where he lived, who he associated with, and what phone numbers he used. She told him the work he was doing was killing children.

West says she and her team turned over all the evidence they gathered to Nigerian authorities before leaving the country. Names, locations, phone numbers, bank account records, the full paper trail they had assembled. No arrests have been made.
“We believe our scammer is still out there, contributing to the scam economy,” she said.
She was careful not to frame the failure as simply a Nigerian problem. Sextortion is a global operation, she said, running on technology platforms and digital payment infrastructure that crosses dozens of borders. Arresting one man in one town, she acknowledged, does not stop the machine.
“Maybe he will go to jail. But arresting one man in one town doesn’t stop a machine this size.”

Her broader call was directed at technology companies: the platforms where these crimes begin. She argued that stronger safeguards built into social media and messaging apps, before teenagers ever make contact with a scammer, would do more to prevent deaths than prosecutions after the fact.
But the gap between what West’s team accomplished on the ground and what followed it, a complete absence of enforcement action, is the part of this story that is harder to explain away. She identified the “Yahoo boy”. She handed over the evidence. She sat across from him on a screen and told him, to his face, that he was going to jail. And he walked away.
