South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb has announced a temporary suspension of Terra network withdrawals for Luna 2.0 (LUNA2), scheduled to begin at 12:00 a.m. UTC on July 24. The exchange cited routine wallet maintenance as the reason for the brief halt, which is expected to last several hours.

What the Suspension Entails

According to the official notice, Bithumb will pause all LUNA2 withdrawal requests while it performs system upgrades on its Terra network wallet. Deposits, however, are not affected by this maintenance window. The exchange advised users to complete any pending withdrawals before the cutoff time to avoid delays.

This type of temporary suspension is not uncommon among major exchanges, which periodically update wallet infrastructure to improve security, performance, or compatibility with network upgrades. Bithumb has not indicated any security incident or irregular activity behind the decision.

Context and Implications for Traders

LUNA2, the rebranded token of the Terra blockchain following the collapse of the original Terra ecosystem in 2022, has maintained a modest but active trading presence on exchanges like Bithumb. South Korea remains one of the most active markets for Terra-related assets, and any service disruption on a major local exchange can influence short-term trading behavior.

For holders of LUNA2 on Bithumb, the key takeaway is to plan ahead. If you intend to move tokens to a private wallet or another exchange during this period, it is advisable to initiate the transfer before the suspension takes effect. Once the maintenance is complete, normal withdrawal functionality will resume without further notice.

Why Wallet Maintenance Matters

Wallet upgrades are essential for ensuring the safety of user funds and the smooth operation of blockchain networks. Exchanges like Bithumb must regularly update their systems to support new protocol features, patch vulnerabilities, and maintain compatibility with evolving blockchain standards. While such maintenance can be inconvenient, it is a standard practice that ultimately benefits users by reducing the risk of technical issues or security breaches.

Conclusion

Bithumb’s temporary suspension of LUNA2 withdrawals on July 24 is a routine operational measure, not a cause for alarm. Users should take note of the timeline and complete any necessary transactions beforehand. The exchange will likely resume normal service within a few hours, and no further impact on the broader market is anticipated.

FAQs

Q1: Will my LUNA2 tokens be safe during the suspension?
Yes. Your tokens remain securely stored on Bithumb. The suspension only affects withdrawal requests, not the balance or security of your account.

Q2: How long will the suspension last?
Bithumb has not specified an exact duration, but similar maintenance windows typically last between 2 to 6 hours. The exchange will announce when withdrawals resume.

Q3: Can I still trade LUNA2 on Bithumb during this time?
Yes. Trading and deposits are not affected by this maintenance. Only withdrawals via the Terra network are temporarily paused.
