Sara Rodriguez quit Wisconsin's governor race on Friday over inflated finance reports, an exit prediction markets had already priced in as her odds slid to about 5%.

Rodriguez announced the decision in a video posted to X, telling supporters the financial questions would hang over a race Democrats cannot afford to lose in a premier 2026 battleground. She had ranked among the leading Democrats hoping to succeed Tony Evers, who retires after two terms. Her departure scrambles a primary that looked close only days ago.
She fired campaign manager Kara Spencer on Jul. 13, blaming serious mismanagement of the reports. A closer review showed the filings overstated her 2025 contributions by hundreds of thousands of dollars, an error traced to donations logged twice that left her with far less cash on hand than every Democratic rival.
The gap surfaced only when television stations pulled her ads over unpaid bills.

Blockchain Disclosure Debate Grows

The collapse arrived in the middle of a live push to move campaign finance on-chain. Federal candidates report to the Federal Election Commission just four times a year, so mistakes can hide for weeks between filings. Backers of blockchain disclosure argue that a public wallet logs every dollar in real time, timestamped and far harder to double count or quietly revise.
Congressional candidate Michael Carbonara ran his own campaign through a public crypto wallet, letting donors and reporters follow the money without waiting for a filing window. He contends the setup flags questionable activity early and turns disclosure into something closer to continuous verification, a pitch that has gained traction as Congress debates the CLARITY Act, even as skeptics question adoption and voter privacy.

Prediction Markets Priced Exit

Traders had marked Rodriguez down long before she spoke. A week earlier Kalshi gave her 34% in the primary, behind state Rep. Francesca Hong at 49% and ahead of former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes. By Friday Polymarket priced her near 5% and lifted Hong toward 67%, a swing that tracked the scandal almost in real time even as the same books still favored Democrats to hold the seat in November.
Rodriguez had looked like the field's consolidation pick only weeks earlier, winning a June party straw poll after David Crowley and Missy Hughes left the race and endorsed her as the safer general-election bet. Her exit now hands the Aug. 11 primary to Barnes, Hong, Kelda Roys and Joel Brennan, with Democrats scrambling to settle on a nominee.
