2026

when

Higher

RTX is about to walk into an earnings day that actually matters. The company will drop Q2 2026 numbers on Thursday, July 23, before the market opens, with the call set for later that morning. That timing is already circled on a lot of desks (RTX press release / PR Newswire).

Missile headlines have been everywhere. Stingers. Sidewinders. Capacity expansions. Policy talk is heating up in Washington too. The question is simple and a little uncomfortable: does all that translate into the kind of visibility that lets RTX take guidance higher and keep it there?

One more twist. The Street is quietly leaning bullish into the print, which helps until it doesn’t. Expectations cut both ways.

Defense demand is running hot. Europe is rearming, the U.S. is pushing for replenishment, and allies want inventory now, not next year. RTX sits right in the middle of that with Raytheon for missiles and sensors, Pratt & Whitney for engines, and Collins for avionics and interiors. The setup going into Q2 feels like a tug-of-war between near-term order strength and the operational reality of actually building and shipping more hardware.

Guidance only moves sustainably when backlog turns into revenue at healthy margins and cash shows up. Orders are table stakes. Conversion is the game.

There’s also a policy layer. Fresh supplemental funding can compress decision cycles, unstick paperwork, and turn options into firm orders. That is the difference between a headline and a model change.

Fresh orders are piling up, and factories are sprinting

Missiles are the pointy end of the story

Two recent announcements did the talking for RTX. First, Raytheon landed a $1.1 billion U.S. Navy contract for AIM-9X Block II missiles and said it plans to lift capacity to roughly 2,500 missiles per year to meet U.S. and allied demand (Raytheon (RTX) media release / PR Newswire).

Then, another shot across the bow: Raytheon and Diehl Defence are working to double global Stinger production capacity, explicitly to support NATO and European procurement needs (Raytheon (RTX) media release / PR Newswire). These are not paper wins. They imply tooling, labor, and supplier commitments that should show up in shipments and cash over coming quarters.

Policy tailwinds matter to timing

On July 15, House Republicans rolled out a $95 billion budget-resolution outline that included substantial defense and supplemental funding tied to the Iran war, a signal that replenishment orders may accelerate once the sausage-making ends (Associated Press). It’s not law, but it narrows the cone of uncertainty around near-term funding.

Put that together and you get a reason the Street is inching estimates up ahead of the call. Jefferies reiterated a Buy on July 8, lifted its Q2 segment-adjusted EPS estimate to 1.74 versus consensus around 1.67, and bumped its 2026 adjusted EPS view to 7.10, above RTX’s 6.70 to 6.90 guide. It also penciled in roughly $8.6 billion of 2026 free cash flow, essentially saying defense demand can carry more of the load (Investing.com).

What higher guidance would actually require

It’s tempting to assume big orders equal higher guidance. Not so fast. RTX needs a chain of things to click, and some of them live outside the company’s control.

Backlog conversion. Missile programs need parts on time, qualified labor on shift, and suppliers that don’t blink. The company will likely highlight cycle-time reductions and yield improvements if they are confident.

Segment margins. Raytheon’s defense margins can drift with mix and learning-curve effects. Collins Aerospace usually enjoys steadier pricing leverage. Pratt & Whitney still has legacy inspection and MRO cost overhangs from prior engine issues. Watch if defense mix is diluting or lifting consolidated margins.

Book-to-bill sustainability. One quarter does not make a cycle. Look for commentary that suggests sustained demand through 2027, not just a 2026 pull-forward.

Cash conversion. Higher shipments should show up as working-capital release later in the year. If free cash flow guidance stays cautious, that’s your tell that conversion is lumpy.

Capacity ramps. Stinger and AIM-9X expansions are great, but they need people, fixtures, and suppliers. Lead times in energetics and seekers can still bite.

Program risk and export windows. Export approvals or funding pauses can push revenue right when the factory is ready to ship.

In other words, guidance moves when RTX shows control of this sequence, not just because demand is loud.

Street vs. RTX: where the numbers diverge

Here’s a quick look at how the external view stacks up against the company’s current posture. Keep in mind RTX has not preannounced and quarter-to-quarter noise is normal.

Metric Company/Consensus Jefferies View Notes Q2 2026 segment-adjusted EPS Consensus ~1.67 1.74 Jefferies sees upside into the print (Investing.com). FY 2026 adjusted EPS RTX guidance 6.70–6.90 7.10 Street camp argues defense strength supports a raise. FY 2026 Free Cash Flow Not disclosed by RTX in the releases cited ~$8.6B Implied by Jefferies, contingent on conversion and mix.

Jefferies also kept a $220 price target, which is one way of saying the market is comfortable paying up if guidance inches higher and cash tracks the talk (Investing.com). The corollary is obvious. If RTX holds guidance flat and punts cash to the back half, the air comes out of that view fast.

Civil aerospace is still the swing factor

Collins tends to be steady

Collins Aerospace rides global flight activity and aftermarket demand. That usually means predictable revenue and decent pricing power on spares and interiors. If flight hours remain stable, Collins can cushion any defense program mix shifts.

Pratt is the wild card

Pratt & Whitney has been managing inspection and maintenance programs tied to earlier engine issues. The details evolve, but the theme is the same: shop visits, parts, and customer support can pressure margins and pull mechanics away from new-build ramps. If RTX talks about faster turn times, improved parts availability, or fewer grounded aircraft, that would ease a big piece of the investor worry list.

The risk, of course, is that commercial programs drag just as defense ramps. That would eat into the operating leverage investors are penciling in for the back half.

What to listen for on July 23

We know the calendar. The release hits before the bell and the conference call follows the same morning (RTX press release / PR Newswire). Here’s a practical checklist for the call.

Missile capacity milestones. Concrete data points on Stinger and AIM-9X monthly output, supplier readiness, and hiring progress.

Defense segment margins. Are learning-curve and mix effects net positive in H2, or do they hold margins flat until 2027?

Order-to-revenue cycle time. How long from award to shipment on the new lots, especially for allies in Europe.

Cash cadence. Working capital mechanics by quarter, and whether FCF is back-half weighted. Any color on 2026 exit velocity vs 2027 setup.

Commercial updates. Collins aftermarket growth and Pratt shop-visit trends. Any sign that civil is helping, not hindering, defense-led upside.

Policy signals. How the $95B outline and other supplementals could change the near-term order book and production planning (Associated Press).

Capital allocation. Buybacks, dividends, and any M&A appetite, especially for supply chain bottleneck relief.

Risk disclosures. Export approvals, capacity constraints, and supplier health checks.

If RTX puts green checks next to half of that list, a guidance lift becomes a live option. If not, expect a hold-steady message with a promise of second-half delivery.

Risks & What Could Go Wrong

Supply chain limits. Energetics, microelectronics, and castings remain tight in pockets. One missing component can idle a line.

Labor availability. Hiring skilled technicians at pace is hard, and overtime only works for so long.

Policy slippage. Budget negotiations can drift, export approvals can slow, and elections can freeze decision-making.

Program hiccups. Testing delays or quality fixes can push revenue recognition to later quarters.

Commercial drag. A heavier-than-expected Pratt MRO burden or softer aftermarket could offset defense upside.

Pricing and mix. Early-lot learning curves and fixed-price elements can pressure margins even as volume rises.

Big demand without clean execution creates the worst outcome for guidance: higher costs now, revenue later.
