Substitute Ferran Torres scored the lone goal in the 106th minute at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, giving Spain a 1-0 extra-time win that outlets confirmed extended its unbeaten run to 38 matches. The victory marks Spain's second World Cup crown, following its first in 2010, and closes out Argentina's bid to defend the title it won in 2022. Lionel Messi and Argentina fell short in what the forward has suggested will be his final World Cup appearance, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez still closed the tournament with 11 saves in the final alone, the most ever recorded in a men's World Cup title match.
Prediction markets had tracked the matchup closely for days before kickoff. Polymarket's World Cup Winner contract processed $4.28 billion in total volume, with shares on Spain trading near 59 cents against 40 cents for Argentina. The market settles in USDC(USDC), the dollar-pegged stablecoin recorded on a public blockchain.
On Kalshi, a separate Spain versus Argentina contract showed $1.29 billion in volume, pricing Spain a 59% favorite and Argentina at 41.6%. Both platforms landed on nearly identical odds despite operating independent order books, a rare alignment traders noted throughout the tournament.

Traders split unevenly on how to back the favorite. Polymarket users committed $123.5 million directly to a Spain outcome, compared with $158 million on Argentina, meaning more capital flowed toward the team that ultimately lost.
One anonymous account, known as fishalive, turned roughly $4 million into $9 million earlier in the tournament by betting against Spain.
The gap reflects how prediction markets can diverge from probability pricing when bettors chase value on a live underdog rather than the favorite. Kalshi's broader World Cup category, which includes props tied to Golden Boot and viewership totals, carried $1.29 billion of its own, alongside a $66 million Polymarket market on the tournament's top scorer.
Total trading across dozens of World Cup contracts on both platforms had already surpassed $25 billion in the days leading up to Sunday.
That volume dwarfed other major sports markets tracked this year, including roughly $2 billion for the NBA Finals and $1 billion for the Super Bowl. The World Cup Winner contract grew steadily since the tournament opened, crossing $2.6 billion in early July before closing at $4.28 billion by kickoff, surpassing the 2024 U.S. presidential election market as Polymarket's largest single event.
