Aurora, the EVM-compatible network built on NEAR, has experienced a mainnet outage since 02:16 UTC on July 20, disrupting network-level access for users and applications that depend on the chain. The Aurora mainnet outage is being treated as a network-wide disruption rather than an isolated app-specific fault, and no confirmed cause has been published.
The outage began at 02:16 UTC on July 20 and remains the anchor fact of this incident. Beyond the start time, the operational details available through Aurora's own channels remain limited. For related coverage, see <a href="https://www.tokentopnews.com/institutional-investors-bitcoin-holdings-q1-2026-filings/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Around 2,000 Institutional Investors Reported Bitcoin Holdings in Q1 2026 Filings</a>.
Aurora operates as an <a href="https://aurora.dev/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ethereum-compatible environment</a> that lets developers deploy Solidity smart contracts and run dApps. A mainnet-level interruption therefore affects the base layer that transactions and contract calls settle on, not a single front-end. <h2 id="what-is-confirmed-and-what-remains-unknown">What Is Confirmed and What Remains Unknown</h2>
The confirmed facts are narrow: the network has been down since 02:16 UTC on July 20, and the disruption is at the mainnet level. For related coverage, see <a href="https://www.tokentopnews.com/genius-act-turns-1-year-old-after-becoming-law/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">GENIUS Act Turns 1 Year Old After Becoming Law: What Changed</a>.
The unknowns are larger. There is no confirmed root cause, no published exploit finding, and no verified statement attributing the downtime to a specific validator, RPC, or infrastructure failure. Readers should not infer a technical failure point that has not been stated. Network status can be checked directly against Aurora's <a href="https://explorer.aurora.dev/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">block explorer</a>, which reflects whether new blocks and transactions are being recorded. Official communications are posted to the project's <a href="https://x.com/auroraisnear?lang=en" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">verified X account</a>.
<h2 id="how-the-outage-could-affect-users-and-on-chain-activity">How the Outage Could Affect Users and On-Chain Activity</h2>
Because the disruption sits at the mainnet layer, the practical consequences apply to core network functions rather than a single interface. The effects below are described in conditional terms, since Aurora has not quantified impact.
For retail users: transfers, wallet actions, and token movements that route through Aurora mainnet may fail or stall while the network is unavailable. Users should verify exchange, bridge, and dApp notices before attempting transactions.
For builders: smart contract interactions and dApp calls that depend on Aurora block production would be interrupted for the duration of the outage. Cross-chain flows are a particular pressure point during network incidents, as recent cases such as the <a href="https://www.tokentopnews.com/allbridge-exploited-1-65-million-funds-bridged-solana-to-ethereum/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Allbridge exploit that moved funds from Solana to Ethereum</a> have shown how bridge activity concentrates risk when infrastructure is stressed.
For market watchers: there is no verified evidence of losses, exploits, or data corruption tied to this outage. Claims to that effect should not be treated as established until Aurora confirms them.
<h2 id="what-to-watch-next-for-recovery-and-official-updates">What to Watch Next for Recovery and Official Updates</h2>
No official recovery estimate has been provided, so recovery timing remains unconfirmed unless Aurora explicitly updates it.
The most useful follow-up signals to monitor are concrete and verifiable:
<ul>
 <li>Official status posts or restart notices from Aurora's verified channels.</li>
 <li>Validator or infrastructure notices explaining the interruption.</li>
 <li>Confirmation of resumed block production or transaction flow on the block explorer.</li>
</ul>
The story would change materially if Aurora publishes a root cause, confirms restored block production, or issues a security-related statement. Until any of those occur, the last confirmed data point stands: the network has been down since 02:16 UTC on July 20, and independent verification through Aurora's official status channels remains the only reliable way to track resumption.
