Both providers solve the same problem, and they solve it with opposite philosophies.

NordVPN built its own obfuscation protocol in-house and keeps it proprietary. GnuVPN ships two open-source protocols and lets you pick. Same goal, which is making VPN traffic look like ordinary browsing so a firewall lets it through. Very different bets on how you get there.

Here is how the two approaches compare, and where each one earns its money.

Why Networks Block VPNs in the First Place

Every VPN protocol has a signature. WireGuard packets look like WireGuard packets, and OpenVPN looks like OpenVPN, which makes both straightforward for a firewall to spot and drop.

That is how a campus network, a corporate filter, or a national censorship system blocks you. It is not reading your traffic. It is recognising the shape of it.

Obfuscation answers that by disguising the shape. Learning how to beat a VPN block comes down to which disguise your provider offers, and that is where these two part ways.

How NordVPN Does It: NordWhisper

NordVPN launched NordWhisper at the start of 2025. It uses web tunnel technology, wrapping VPN traffic inside standard HTTP packets so filters see routine web activity, a technique the Tor Project released first.

It works, and NordVPN has committed to it. In a recent update, the company moved its entire Obfuscated Servers category off OpenVPN and onto NordWhisper, promising faster connections and more locations.

The limits are worth knowing, and NordVPN states most of them openly:

It is not fast. NordVPN does not expect it to win connection-speed races and recommends other protocols when nothing is blocking you.

Three platforms. Windows, Android, and Linux, with wider support still rolling out.

It is manual. NordWhisper does not activate automatically when WireGuard fails. You select it yourself.

It disables other features. Meshnet, Dedicated IP, and Onion Over VPN do not work while it is on.

It is proprietary. Closed source, NordVPN only. You trust the company’s word on what it does.

How GnuVPN Does It: SoftEther and AmneziaWG

A VPN with SoftEther and AmneziaWG carries two obfuscation protocols instead of one, both open source, both selectable in the same app alongside WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2.

SoftEther: The Heavy Disguise

GnuVPN SoftEther wraps traffic in ordinary HTTPS on port 443, the same port that secures normal websites, which is hard to filter without breaking the web itself. It can also tunnel over ICMP and DNS where everything else fails.

It came out of an academic project at the University of Tsukuba, and anyone can read the code. This is the one to reach for when a network is aggressive.

AmneziaWG: Cover at WireGuard Speed

GnuVPN AmneziaWG takes WireGuard and randomises its packet signature, so filters trained to spot standard WireGuard have a harder time flagging it.

It keeps WireGuard speeds while doing it, which makes it the pick when you want cover without paying for it in latency.

Why Open Source Changes the Argument

The open source VPN protocol point is the real split between these two providers. SoftEther and AmneziaWG can be audited by anyone, and neither belongs to GnuVPN, so switching providers does not cost you the protocol. NordWhisper goes where NordVPN goes.

Head-to-Head Comparison

The NordWhisper vs SoftEther question is narrower than the overall comparison, so here is both:

What the Protocol Advantage Unlocks

Two protocols instead of one sound academic until something blocks you. Here is where it stops being academic.

Cloud Gaming Platforms Detect VPNs

Cloud gaming is the clearest case. GeForce NOW detects VPN connections and flags them, and Microsoft can flag VPN traffic on Xbox Cloud Gaming, which puts you in an argument with the platform before you have played anything.

GnuVPN cloud gaming sessions get a way around that: WireGuard while nothing is blocking you, then SoftEther or AmneziaWG when something is.

NordWhisper would work here too, on the three platforms that have it, at speeds NordVPN admits are not its strength. Cloud gaming runs on a 15- to 30-millisecond latency budget, so that trade-off costs more here than anywhere else.

Exchange Access and Crypto Payment

For anyone holding crypto, the same problem shows up at the exchange. Restricted networks and geo-blocks both sit between you and your account, and both are the kind of filter obfuscation that exists to handle.

GnuVPN crypto payment support closes the loop. As a VPN that accepts crypto, it takes USDT on TRC20, TRON, Bitcoin, and Litecoin, and a TRC20 transfer clears in about three seconds for under a dollar.

NordVPN takes more coins, over ten through CoinGate, BinancePay, and BitPay, and USDT is popular enough there to make up 29.1% of its crypto payments.

Neither is anonymous. Both still want an email address, and both see your real IP at signup.

Where Each One Wins

Pick NordVPN if you want scale and a verified privacy record. Five no-logs audits, a court case it survived, 111+ countries, ten devices, and 30 days to change your mind. That is a package GnuVPN does not match and does not pretend to.

Pick GnuVPN if the block is your actual problem. Two open obfuscation protocols instead of one proprietary one, five protocols in the app, TRC20 payments, and $2.79 a month. As a cheaper NordVPN alternative, it wins on the narrow ground it chose, and it concedes the rest.

FAQ

Is GnuVPN a good NordVPN alternative?

For restrictive networks, yes. It offers two open-source obfuscation protocols against NordWhisper’s one, and it costs less. As a general-purpose NordVPN alternative it trails on server count, device limit, refund window and published audits, so the answer depends entirely on whether a network is blocking you.

Is GnuVPN cheaper than NordVPN?

Yes. GnuVPN’s two-year plan works out at $2.79 per month against NordVPN’s $3.09, and it takes USDT on TRC20 if you would sooner not use a card. NordVPN backs its price with a 30-day money-back guarantee, whereas GnuVPN’s window runs 14 days on annual plans, so the saving comes with less time to change your mind.

Can I use GnuVPN on a network that already blocks NordVPN?

Often, yes, because the two disguise traffic differently. NordWhisper wraps VPN traffic in HTTP web tunnels, while SoftEther uses HTTPS on port 443 and can fall back to ICMP or DNS tunnelling. A filter tuned to catch one mechanism does not automatically catch the other, and NordWhisper is only on Windows, Android, and Linux so far.

Which is better on a blocked network, NordWhisper or SoftEther?

Both disguise VPN traffic as web traffic, and both work. SoftEther is open source and auditable, uses HTTPS on port 443, and can fall back to ICMP or DNS tunnelling. NordWhisper is proprietary and available on Windows, Android, and Linux. The practical difference is that GnuVPN pairs SoftEther with AmneziaWG, so you can trade disguise for speed.

Does NordVPN support SoftEther or AmneziaWG?

No. NordVPN offers NordLynx, OpenVPN, and NordWhisper. Among VPN for restrictive networks options, SoftEther support is limited to a small group of providers that includes GnuVPN, which is why the two companies solve the same problem in different ways.
