Apple reclaimed the top position for the first time since April 2025, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/apple-closes-nvidia-race-worlds-most-valuable-company-2026-07-17/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">according</a> to Reuters, after Nvidia had led the ranking since June of that year. The gap remained small and could reverse quickly.
Nvidia’s 3.5% decline reduced its market value to roughly $4.86 trillion, while Apple remained near $4.88 trillion during Friday trading. Apple has outperformed the other Magnificent Seven stocks this year as investors gained confidence in its ability to monetize AI without matching rivals’ infrastructure spending.
The company introduced a delayed overhaul of Siri last month and is preparing for Tim Cook to hand the chief executive role to hardware veteran John Ternus in September.

Toni Meadows, head of investment at BRI Wealth Management, said investor sentiment toward Apple had changed. “Apple was seen as a laggard in the AI race because it wasn't spending to develop models, but now sentiment has changed,” she said. Meadows said services, hardware upgrades and customer retention could support earnings while limiting some of the capital pressure faced by infrastructure providers.
Nvidia remains central to generative AI because its graphics processors power much of the industry’s computing demand.
Benjamin Hall, vice president of alpha research at Segal Marco Advisors, said Apple’s move did not diminish Nvidia’s longer-term role. “I don't see any meaningful distinction,” Hall said.
Other semiconductor companies are also drawing investor attention.
Micron crossed a $1 trillion valuation in May, while SK Hynix listed on Nasdaq this month, but the broader chip rally weakened as the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index fell nearly 19% from its record.
Nvidia became the first company to exceed a $5 trillion valuation in October 2025, four months after taking the global market-value lead. Apple’s return to first place, its first since April 2025, shows how quickly leadership can change when expectations around AI spending, product demand and earnings shift.
