Crypto has spent 17 years looking for a payments use case bigger than speculation. The customers who finally deliver one may not be human.According to a May <a href="https://keyrock.com/who-pays-the-agent/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">report</a> from market maker Keyrock, AI agents completed 176 million on-chain payments in the 12 months to April 2026.The total dollar value of the payments—$73 million—would barely register on Visa's network, but the transaction count is significant. That growth is why Coinbase, AWS, Stripe, and now BNB Chain are building payment rails for software.<h2 id="what-is-an-ai-agent">What Is an AI Agent?</h2>While chatbots answer questions, AI agents complete tasks. ChatGPT's generation of AI could hold a conversation; the next generation was upgraded with tools. They can browse the web, call APIs, execute code, and carry out a growing range of tasks autonomously.AI agents chain tools together to pursue a goal, whether that's booking a flight or rebalancing a portfolio. Since blockchain wallets hold simple cryptographic keys, no account application is required, and software like AI agents can create and access wallets.The wallet lets an agent earn, hold, and spend money without a human having to click "confirm" at each step.<h2 id="why-do-ai-agents-need-crypto">Why Do AI Agents Need Crypto?</h2>Because Know Your Customer rules attach to a person or a legal entity, an AI agent cannot open a bank account in its own name.<a href="https://corporate.visa.com/en/sites/visa-perspectives/newsroom/product-drop-intelligent-commerce.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Visa</a> and<a href="https://www.mastercard.com/us/en/news-and-trends/press/2025/september/mastercard-unveils-new-tools-and-collaborations-to-power-smarter,-safer-agentic-commerce.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> Mastercard</a> have built workarounds: their agent programs let a human set spending limits, then let the agent spend against that human's card. The model works for shopping, and it keeps a person accountable, but it doesn’t work for machine-to-machine commerce.The Keyrock report, which the firm produced with Coinbase and Virtuals, found that the median agent payment sits between $0.01 and $0.10, and 76% of agent transactions fall below the $0.30 minimum fee that card networks charge. An agent paying a tenth of a cent for one API call cannot use a rail where the fee runs 300 times the purchase price.This is where stablecoins prove their utility. Stablecoins transmitted on a low-cost <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/layer-1-blockchain" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">L1</a> and <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/layer-2" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">L2</a> can be used to settle those payments in seconds, for a fraction of a cent, around the clock, and with no sign-up.<h2 id="what-ai-agents-are-live-on-chain-today">What AI Agents Are Live On-Chain Today?</h2>Most agent tokens launched during the 2024-2025 mania produced little beyond social media posts. A select few projects shipped working products, and just a handful are still going strong today.<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bankr-coin/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bankr</a> executes trades for users who post plain-English instructions on X. This month, it added support for Robinhood wallet. <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/tokenbot-2/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Clanker</a>, another Base agent, deploys new tokens on command and has handled thousands of launches. In January, an agent called Clawdbot (built on Bankr and Clanker) earned roughly $100,000 in trading fees in one night, then deployed its own vesting contract to lock the funds.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/b2cf1e49ee1348a5bedb4f40d821edae.png"><a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/aixbt/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">AIXBT</a>, the market-analysis agent from the Virtuals ecosystem, has become one of the most-followed accounts in crypto. One thing is apparent: the projects cluster around finance, with trading, portfolio management, and market analysis being the dominant use cases for crypto AI agents.Blockchains were built to handle money, so, unsurprisingly, AI agents have found traction there first. But prices don't reflect the potential, as most agent tokens are far below their January 2025 peaks, a drawdown that mirrors the wider crypto market rather than a failure specific to this sector.<h2 id="the-infrastructure-push">The Infrastructure Push</h2>Coinbase built its x402 protocol around HTTP 402, a "Payment Required" status code that sat unused for 30 years. It lets any server charge a stablecoin micropayment for access, and developers adopted it fast.Coinbase reported over $100 million in transactions in the protocol's first year, with 90% of on-chain agentic stablecoin volume running on the Base L2.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/967ff55df00741f49defa705fb52586b.png">Chainalysis and independent analysts <a href="https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/x402-agentic-payments-adoption/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">estimate</a> that roughly half of x402's transaction count came from a gamified <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/view/memes/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">meme coin</a> minting scheme called Ping (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/ping/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">PING</a>) rather than commerce, and that daily spending on real services remains modest.Quality is beginning to improve, however. Payments above $1 now carry 95% of the value moved through the protocol, up from 49% in early 2025.Other major players have also joined the AI agent landscape. Recent developments in the space include:<ul><li>x402 goes neutral: Coinbase<a href="https://www.linuxfoundation.org/press/linux-foundation-is-launching-the-x402-foundation-and-welcoming-the-contribution-of-the-x402-protocol" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> handed</a> the protocol to the Linux Foundation in April 2026, with Visa, Stripe, Google, Microsoft and Cloudflare among the founding members.</li><li>The web is plugging in: Cloudflare launched a gateway in July that lets websites charge agents for pages and data over x402; Apify put 20,000 automation tools behind x402 paywalls; and Coinbase partnered with AWS so agents can pay for compute as they use it.</li><li>BNB Chain is building an agent-first blockchain: On July 8, BNB Chain<a href="https://www.coindesk.com/web3/2026/07/08/bnb-chain-is-building-a-new-layer-1-for-high-frequency-trading-and-ai-agents" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> unveiled</a> plans for a new layer-1 aimed at AI agents and high-frequency trading.</li><li>Tech and card giants are entering:<a href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/ai-machine-learning/announcing-agents-to-payments-ap2-protocol" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>Google's <a href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/ai-machine-learning/announcing-agents-to-payments-ap2-protocol" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">AP2 protocol</a>,<a href="https://stripe.com/newsroom/news/stripe-openai-instant-checkout" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>Stripe and OpenAI's <a href="https://stripe.com/newsroom/news/stripe-openai-instant-checkout" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Instant Checkout</a>, and Visa's Intelligent Commerce have all launched agent-payment programs since early 2025.</li></ul>Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said in June that agents had made more than 160 million payments through x402 alone over the past year.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/a5659be0dd7e48eb8fd30f10a3425cd5.png">If that compounds, agents could go on to become a new class of internet users and crypto’s first real mass use case, with each agent needing a wallet, a crypto balance, and a cheap blockchain to operate on.<h2 id="how-to-get-started-with-ai-agents">How to Get Started With AI Agents</h2>You can size up the space without spending anything: follow an agent like AIXBT and judge whether its output beats the analysts you already read.If you want hands-on experience, you could try a delegated-trading agent like Bankr with a small amount and hard spending limits (your agent's mistakes come out of your balance).
