Europe’s automotive giant Volkswagen is weighing the elimination of up to 50,000 additional positions as it struggles to narrow a widening cost differential with international competitors. Combined with previously announced reductions, the company’s total workforce cuts could reach 100,000.
[[EMBED_0]]

In an internal communication to staff obtained by Reuters on Monday, CEO Oliver Blume revealed the sobering figures. The executive explained that the company’s current operational expenses exceed those of comparable manufacturers by approximately 20%, which theoretically justifies removing another 50,000 roles across its global operations.

“We are currently assessing across all brands, companies and regions how many adjustments are actually necessary and feasible,” Blume wrote.

Previous Reduction Plans in Progress

The German automaker had previously committed to approximately 50,000 workforce reductions throughout its portfolio, encompassing its Porsche and Audi divisions. This initial agreement, negotiated with labor unions over a year and a half ago, outlined billions in cost reductions and 35,000 German job eliminations by 2030, while preventing immediate facility shutdowns.

A supplementary arrangement detailed 15,000 further cuts across Audi, Porsche, and the group’s Cariad software unit. During the opening quarter of this year, Volkswagen achieved 1 billion euros in overhead expense reductions through these measures. However, management indicated that additional actions would be required.

Uncertain Outlook for Domestic Manufacturing Sites

Four production facilities on German soil—located in Emden, Hanover, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm—are currently under strategic assessment. Blume acknowledged that management has yet to identify viable, competitive purposes for these locations past 2030.

Union officials reportedly rejected management’s restructuring proposals during the supervisory board meeting held last week. These proposals allegedly included additional workforce reductions and potential facility closures.

Blume expressed a preference for identifying alternative uses for underutilized manufacturing capacity rather than pursuing closures. Under consideration are possibilities such as manufacturing Chinese-market Volkswagen vehicles in Europe or repurposing facilities for defense-related production.

The organization is simultaneously evaluating its product range, with proposals to reduce offerings by as much as 50%. Volkswagen intends to concentrate on its most profitable market segments while aligning production volumes with actual customer demand.

“The global situation has continued to deteriorate over the past twelve months,” Blume said following last week’s board meeting.

The automaker confronts challenges from multiple fronts: substantial tariff expenses, softening consumer demand, intensifying competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, and the elevated costs associated with its German production infrastructure. The company’s shares closed at $8.21 last Friday, declining 1.08%. Long-term technical indicators remain bearish, with moving average analyses showing a unanimous strong sell recommendation.
