Lighter’s LIT token traded near $2.60 on July 7, roughly 80% above its early June levels. The decentralized exchange packed three separate catalysts into seven days: distribution through Robinhood Wallet, a shift to permanent burns of repurchased tokens, and a seat for founder Vladimir Novakovski on the Innovation Advisory Committee of the CFTC, the main US derivatives regulator. Each of the three would have moved the price on its own.

Robinhood Just Handed Lighter Nearly 28 Million Potential Users

Robinhood launched the public mainnetof Robinhood Chain, its Layer-2 network built on Arbitrum’s stack, on July 1. The same update reworked Robinhood Wallet, which now gives eligible users in selected jurisdictions access to perpetual futures through Lighter. Perpetuals are derivative contracts with no expiry date. They track the price of an underlying asset and allow leveraged trading without the trader ever holding the asset itself.

And, for the next 90 days, gas fees on Robinhood Chain are on us, including swaps, bridge transactions, and zero fees on perps. Terms…

The mechanics are worth spelling out, because they explain both the appeal and the limitations. A user deposits the USDG stablecoin as margin into a Lighter smart contract on Robinhood Chain, picks a contract, a direction and a leverage level, then signs the transaction from the wallet. Positions run on isolated margin only, so a loss on one trade never bleeds into another. The product currently supports market orders and nothing else. No stop-loss, no take-profit. Risk management sits entirely on the trader’s shoulders, which matters when leverage is involved. Residents of the US, UK, Canada, Switzerland, the UAE and Singapore are excluded.

The incentives attached to the launch are not small. Lighter committed $11 million worth of LIT to the Robinhood community, with trading points accruing at double the rate inside Robinhood Wallet compared to Lighter’s own web app. Robinhood is covering gas fees on its chain for 90 days and charging zero fees on perps during the promotional window. For a protocol that until now grew on organic DeFi traffic, plugging into a brokerage that serves close to 28 million customers across 38 countries is a different category of distribution entirely.

Burning 6.3% of the Supply Changes the Token’s Math

The tokenomics overhaul arrived alongside the integration and got less attention than it deserved. Since the token generation event, Lighter has used exchange revenue to programmatically buy back roughly 15.5 million LIT, equal to 6.3% of circulating supply. Those tokens were sitting in the treasury. Under the new policy they will be destroyed, and the first burn is scheduled for the weeks following the end of Q2 2026.

A buyback-and-hold program keeps tokens under protocol control, and nothing technically stops them from re-entering the market later. A burn removes them for good. Every future repurchase funded by trading fees now shrinks the supply permanently, which ties LIT demand directly to activity on the exchange itself. Staking is being restructured too. Revenue subsidies from the pre-TGE era are ending, with ecosystem tokens funding rewards instead, at an initial target of about 6% annualized yield.

The CFTC Seat Explains Why Robinhood Said Yes

Novakovski said on the 4th of Julythat he has begun serving as a member of the CFTC’s Innovation Advisory Committee. The committee counts 35 industry members, including executives from Coinbase, Solana Labs, Ripple, Polymarket and Kalshi, and its mandate is to advise the regulator on how blockchain technology and AI are reshaping derivatives and commodity markets.

For an exchange whose entire product is derivatives, a seat at the table where future US rules get discussed carries two practical benefits. The first is early visibility into where regulation is heading in the world’s largest market. The second is a credibility signal to institutional partners, and the Robinhood deal should be read in exactly that light. A publicly listed company under SEC oversight does not embed a protocol with a murky regulatory profile into its consumer wallet.

The Revenue Behind the Valuation: $73M a Year With Zero Incentives

DefiLlama’s numbers explain why some analysts treat LIT as a fundamentals story rather than a pure narrative trade. The protocol generates its volume without paying incentives, which remains rare among derivatives DEXs.

Set the $632.98 million market cap against annualized revenue and the multiple comes out under 9 times. Even at the fully diluted valuation of $2.53 billion, LIT trades around 35 times revenue, while sector leader Hyperliquid spent long stretches trading far richer than that.

Large holders appear to have noticed the gap. Santiment recordedthe strongest whale activity on the Lighter network in six months, with 86 transactions above $100,000 in a single day, and tied the interest to the perp DEX narrative, the tokenomics update and the partnership news.

On the 4-hour timeframe, LIT trades inside a clean uptrend. Price sits above all three key simple moving averages: the 50-period at $2.15, the 100-period at $1.90 and the 200-period at $1.73. A moving average smooths out the price over a set window, and when all three rise in stacked order, technicians treat the trend as structurally healthy.

The RSI, an oscillator that measures the speed of price moves on a scale from 0 to 100, cooled to around 63 after spiking near 80 at the July 6 peak. Readings above 70 typically flag overheating. The pullback below that threshold while price holds its ground suggests the market is digesting gains without breaking the trend structure. The risk hides in the distance to support. Price currently floats more than 20% above the 50-period average, and stretches like that tend to close through a correction sooner or later.

The Burn Starts in Weeks, the Free Fees End in September

The next few months will test whether the rally has legs or just a good news cycle. The first actual burn lands in July or August and gives holders a verifiable benchmark for how fast supply contracts in practice. The zero-fee, gas-covered promotional window closes in late September, and only then will it become clear how many Robinhood Wallet users stick around under normal conditions. A structural risk sits in the background as well: half of the total 1 billion LIT supply belongs to the team and investors, and vesting unlocks will produce recurring sell pressure regardless of how the product performs. Anyone tracking LIT will find the most honest signal not in the price but in monthly exchange volume. At $41 billion a month, the burn model works. If volume decays well below that, the whole thesis weakens with it.
