World ID

Sam Altman frames World Network as a “counterweight” to OpenAI, linking the two companies’ fortunes through the World ID identity layer.

Malaysia and Argentina have become the project’s most significant government-facing deployments.

WLD trades near $0.42 after reclaiming the $0.38 level that has defined the token’s range since late January.

Data-privacy bans in multiple countries remain the biggest structural risk to the Orb’s biometric verification model.

Sam Altman built his reputation on OpenAI, but his second major venture, World Network, formerly known as Worldcoin, now sits at the center of his long-term thesis about artificial intelligence. The project uses iris-scanning hardware called the Orb to issue a biometric credential, World ID, that proves a person is human without revealing their identity. As AI-generated text, images and now autonomous agents flood the internet, Altman argues that distinguishing humans from machines will become one of the defining problems of the decade, and he has positioned World Network as the infrastructure meant to solve it.

OpenAI’s Bot Problem Becomes World Network’s Business Case

Large language models have made it hard for platforms, banks and governments to tell whether an online account belongs to a real person. That is the entire pitch. Altman has pushed World ID as a digital passport for this problem, a credential that verifies personhood once and can then be reused across apps without exposing personal data. Reports have suggested OpenAI itself has exploredusing the iris-scanning technology to separate genuine users from bot traffic. WLD’s price history backs this up.

The token has repeatedly moved on OpenAI news, which means markets already price the two projects as connected bets, whether or not the companies formally are.

Altman also frames the token’s long-term utility around universal basic income. His argument is that AI-driven automation will displace enough jobs to require a new distribution mechanism for wealth, and that a verified, global network of unique humans is the necessary foundation for that system to work without being gamed by bots claiming multiple shares.

How the Orb Actually Verifies a Human

The mechanism behind World ID has changed since the project’s early, more controversial iterations. Rather than storing a full iris scan in a central database, the network now relies on secure multi-party computation, splitting the biometric template into separate encrypted fragments held by different parties. No single entity can reconstruct the original image from its fragment, and the system produces a zero-knowledge proof confirming uniqueness without revealing who the person is or where they scanned. Regulators in Hong Kong, Spain and Kenya suspended Orb operations in earlier years over exactly this objection, centralized biometric storage. The redesign was built to take that argument off the table.

Government Partnerships Turn WLD From Startup Bet Into Infrastructure Play

World Network’s most concrete progress in 2026 has come through direct government collaboration rather than consumer adoption alone.

In Malaysia, MIMOS Berhad, the government’s applied research arm, signed an agreement with the Worldcoin Foundation and Tools for Humanity to fold World ID’s verification protocol into the country’s digital identity ecosystem, working alongside e-services provider MyEG. The two sides are even discussing local manufacturing of the Orb hardware, which would give Malaysia a degree of oversight rarely extended to a crypto project by a national government.

Of the two flagship deployments, this one carries more weight. Consumer signups can evaporate; a protocol wired into a national ID system does not get unplugged over a bad quarter.

Argentina is a different story, scale without a state mandate. More than 1% of the population has already completed a World ID scan, and Tools for Humanity has expanded its local hiring to keep up with demand. The credential now shows up in anti-fraud tools used by Mercado Libre, one of the region’s largest e-commerce platforms, giving World Network a functioning use case beyond crypto speculation.

Where Regulators Draw the Line

Altman’s profile works against the project as often as it works for it. The visibility that gets MIMOS to the table is the same visibility that puts the Orb on regulators’ desks in Brussels and Nairobi. Several countries have investigated or paused Orb scanning over biometric data storage, and Tools for Humanity now routinely works with outside law firms to audit local compliance before expanding into new markets, including in Southeast Asia. The gap between welcoming jurisdictions like Malaysia and Argentina and skeptical ones in parts of Europe shows how much the expansion depends on individual governments’ appetite for biometric infrastructure. There is no global rollout here, only a series of separate national negotiations.

WLD Price Reclaims the $0.38 Pivot

Away from the identity debate, WLD trades around $0.4238 with a market capitalization near $1.48 billion, up 11.54% over the past 24 hours despite a 7-day decline of 8.38%, according to CoinMarketCap data. The 4-hour chart on TradingView shows why the current level matters.

Since late January, $0.38 has acted as the token’s main battleground, flipping between support and resistance repeatedly. Losing that level in March triggered a slide to a yearly low near $0.22. WLD has now reclaimed $0.38. A confirmed close above it would suggest March’s breakdown was a fakeout rather than the start of a deeper decline. Fail to hold it, and $0.34 is the next support on the chart. RSI has climbed out of the low-30s zone where it sat in late June, which supports the recovery case. The moving averages do not. Both the 100 and 200-period lines sit well above spot price, so the broader trend remains bearish until price proves otherwise. Funding rates on Coinglass have stayed mostly positive through the year, with only sporadic dips into negative territory, suggesting leveraged positioning has not swung heavily bearish even as spot price fell from highs above $2 to current levels.

One Platform Deal Separates WLD From an Infrastructure Play

The next several months will likely test whether government partnerships like Malaysia’s can be replicated elsewhere, or whether Argentina remains an outlier driven by unusually favorable local conditions. On the chart, everything between $0.38 and $0.43 is now contested territory, and a decisive move out of that range in either direction will set the tone into autumn. The bigger question sits off the chart entirely. If even one major AI platform formally adopts biometric proof of personhood the way OpenAI has reportedly considered, the token stops trading as a crypto bet and starts trading as an infrastructure play. Nothing published so far confirms that step has been taken.
