Altcoins are bleeding capital at a pace not seen in years, and the latest data from CryptoQuantconfirms it with a chart that has circulated widely among traders since July 3. The one-year cumulative buy/sell volume difference for altcoins, excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum, has broken below its previous multi-year floor, sliding toward a cumulative deficit near $240 billion on centralized exchange spot markets. The reading matters because it strips out the two largest assets in the market and isolates what is happening to the thousands of smaller tokens that make up the rest of the crypto economy. What it shows is a market where sellers have outpaced buyers on altcoin spot books for the better part of a year and a half, and the gap is widening rather than closing.

CryptoQuant’s Volume Gap Breaks a Five-Year Range

CryptoQuant’s official account published the chart, credited to analyst IT_Tech_PL, tracking the running total of buy versus sell volume for every altcoin outside Bitcoin and Ethereum going back to 2020. The metric spent most of 2025 building toward what CryptoQuant called a five-year extreme. Instead of stabilizing, the gap pushed even lower through June and into July 2026. Total crypto market capitalization, meanwhile, sits near $2.15 trillion, up less than one percent on the day. Bitcoin capital is not fleeing the market. It is concentrating in one asset while draining out of everything else.

Sentiment data backs up the divergence.

Why 84% of Altcoins Remain Stuck Below Their Long-Term Average

Zoom into the token level and the underperformance gets harder to dismiss as noise. According to CryptoQuant data, 84% of altcoins listed on Binance currently trade below their 200-day moving average, a condition that has held for close to eight consecutive months. A single asset trading below its long-term average for a few weeks is normal chart noise. Eight months of it, across the overwhelming majority of listed tokens, points to a structural shift, not a temporary pullback.

Oversupply is the explanation analysts reach for most often. Layer-2 networks, Layer-3 rollups and meme tokens launched in waves throughout 2024 and 2025, and each new chain or token pulled a slice of available trading capital away from the ones that came before it. Capital that once concentrated in a smaller number of large-cap altcoins now spreads across thousands of competing projects, many of which carry high fully diluted valuations while generating little in the way of active users or protocol revenue. Traders have started calling these tokens “zombie chains,” a label that captures the gap between a project’s paper valuation and its actual usage.

How Whale Deposits and Bitcoin Dominance Point to Deliberate De-Risking

Average exchange deposit sizes have roughly doubled in recent weeks, according to CryptoQuant figures reported by Bitcoin Magazine. That size increase matters: large, methodical deposits are the signature of funds and whales moving size onto exchanges to sell or rebalance, a different pattern from the smaller, erratic transactions typical of retail investors exiting in fear. Bitcoin has absorbed most of the resulting capital

Two Competing Theses for What Happens Next

Altcoin extinction event: token oversupply and liquidity fragmentation are structural, not cyclical. Zombie chains with no meaningful usage keep bleeding capital toward Bitcoin and cash regardless of where the broader market cycle stands.

Capitulation and selective rotation: the depth of the sell-off, particularly the $240 billion cumulative deficit, resembles past capitulation extremes. Analysts at WEEX Research argue the next altcoin rally will be narrow and selective, rewarding tokens with real institutional integrations or regulatory clarity instead of lifting the entire sector at once.

Supporting the second view, stablecoin reserves on exchanges have pooled to more than $63 billion while Bitcoin’s Stablecoin Supply Ratio has dropped sharply, according to CryptoQuant. Both metrics point to real buying power sitting on the sidelines instead of exiting the market outright, waiting on a trigger nobody has identified yet.

The Macro Backdrop: Restrictive Rates and a Maturing Market Structure

Layered on top of the token-specific dynamics is a macro backdrop that has stayed restrictive for longer than many expected. Interest rates have remained elevated, and in that environment capital gravitates toward safe-haven positioning, cash or Bitcoin, rather than speculative altcoins further out on the risk curve. Institutional allocators already have regulated exposure to Bitcoin through spot ETFs, which removes much of the incentive to take on the additional risk of unbacked altcoins just to gain crypto exposure. Grayscale’s research team argues in its 2026 outlook that the standard four-year halving cycle is breaking down, replaced by a market that increasingly splits between Bitcoin as a maturing, institutionally held asset and a long tail of altcoins competing for a shrinking pool of speculative capital. Progress on market structure legislation, including the CLARITY Act working through the U.S. legislative process, adds to that move by giving institutions a clearer regulatory framework to operate within, which tends to favor larger, more established assets first.

One factor that could delay any rotation back into altcoins has less to do with crypto itself than with where capital is currently concentrated. Forward earnings expectations for chip and AI-related stocks remain elevated heading into the second half of 2026, and that has kept a large share of risk capital anchored in equities rather than searching for a new home. Investors positioned in that trade have little reason to rotate out while the growth narrative around it stays intact. A shift toward crypto, and altcoins in particular, becomes more plausible once that trade shows signs of peaking and investors start locking in gains rather than adding to positions. That would not mark the end of the AI investment theme, which shows no sign of fading, but it could mark the point where profit-taking in one overextended market becomes the catalyst for reallocation into another that is closer to a cycle low than a cycle high.
