Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen‘s political action committee played a significant role in Manny Rutinel’s victory in Colorado’s Democratic primary for the state’s 8th Congressional District. The crypto-affiliated “You Can Push Back” Super PAC contributed $1 million to Rutinel’s campaign, helping him secure the party’s nomination in one of America’s most competitive congressional races.
Rutinel defeated former state Representative Shannon Bird with 60.9% of the vote, giving Democrats a progressive nominee ahead of the November general election. His victory has also renewed attention on the growing political influence of crypto industry leaders, who continue investing heavily in key federal races.
Besides financial support, Rutinel benefited from strong backing among Latino voters. That community represents roughly 40% of the district’s population and formed an important part of his winning coalition.
His campaign also emphasized progressive priorities while expanding outreach across the diverse district. Consequently, the primary result has shifted attention toward the general election, where Republicans and Democrats are preparing for another closely contested battle.

Crypto-backed spending adds another dimension to competitive House race

Rutinel will now face Republican Representative Gabe Evans, who currently holds the seat. Political analysts continue to rank Colorado’s 8th Congressional District among the nation’s most competitive House races, making outside spending especially important during the campaign.
Republican strategists believe Rutinel’s progressive record could present opportunities in a politically divided district. Additionally, GOP groups have circulated campaign material highlighting his appearances alongside prominent democratic socialist figures, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Meanwhile, Evans enters the general election with a substantial fundraising advantage. Reports indicate he has already accumulated approximately $3.4 million to defend his seat. However, Democrats have also committed significant resources. Their leading House super PAC has reserved millions of dollars for advertising before voters head to the polls.
Rutinel has also adjusted several policy positions as the campaign moves into its next stage. He has stepped back from previous support for Medicare for All. Moreover, he has softened his earlier opposition to fracking, signaling an effort to broaden his appeal among moderate and independent voters.
Those policy shifts are expected to become a central part of the general election campaign. Both parties will likely focus on persuading undecided voters in a district known for producing close election results.
Chris Larsen’s Super PAC has also drawn attention because of its growing involvement in political campaigns beyond the crypto industry. Its $1 million investment in Rutinel’s campaign highlights how digital asset executives continue expanding their presence in federal elections. As a result, crypto-backed political organizations are expected to remain influential throughout the 2026 election cycle.

Conclusion

Rutinel’s primary victory places Colorado’s 8th Congressional District at the center of another high-profile House contest. At the same time, Chris Larsen’s financial support underscores the expanding role of crypto-backed political action committees as both parties prepare for an expensive and closely watched general election.
