Securitize, a leading figure in real-world asset tokenization, is poised to make its stock market debut under the ticker SECZ on Thursday at the New York Stock Exchange. The BlackRock-backed company’s market entry is widely seen as a litmus test, offering clues as to whether Wall Street’s growing enthusiasm for tokenization technology will spill over into the share prices of companies active in this field.

Direct access for individual investors

Securitize President Brett Redfearn believes that bringing real-world assets onto the blockchain can offer direct benefits not just to institutional giants, but also to everyday investors. Since joining the company in April, Redfearn has argued that enabling investors to control assets digitally could unlock hidden efficiencies typically constrained by the closed nature of traditional finance.

Mini Glossary: Tokenization refers to the digital representation of real-world assets—such as stocks, bonds, or fund shares—on a blockchain. This approach aims to make asset ownership programmable and allows certain transactions to happen without intermediaries.

Redfearn emphasizes that traditional business models could undergo fundamental change as intermediaries are reduced, opening up fresh opportunities for investors.

One of the most prominent examples highlighted by Redfearn is stock lending. Large brokerages routinely lend out clients’ idle shares to short sellers as a source of revenue, but individual investors often end up with only a small fraction of the earnings while brokers pocket the lion’s share.

Stock lending revenues under scrutiny

Data from NerdWallet reveals that Robinhood retains around 85% of its stock lending profits, while Charles Schwab shares about half with customers. According to Redfearn, tokenization could disrupt this model by reducing centralized middlemen and enabling investors to extract more value from their assets—particularly through decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.

Redfearn maintains that new tools developed for participating in tokenized securities ecosystems could unlock an expansive range of options for investors.

Product innovation and the Wall Street challenge

In recent years, Securitize has distinguished itself by enabling institutions like BlackRock to issue securities directly on the blockchain. However, Redfearn acknowledges that the company’s potential in decentralized finance depends heavily on the ingenuity of a wide and indirectly connected developer community creating a new generation of financial applications.

Industry observers suggest that the trend toward blockchain-based financial products is likely to gain traction elsewhere too. Notably, Robinhood is expected to unveil new products on Wednesday. Compass Point analyst Ed Engel notes that, following recent European pilot projects, it’s highly likely that DeFi-compatible tokenized stock offerings will be among the announcements.

Securitize’s stock market debut therefore serves not only as a milestone for financial product innovation but also as a key moment in evaluating the market value of companies spearheading widespread adoption of tokenization technology.
