Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase, is targeting June 25 for the mainnet launch of its Beryl upgrade, which introduces the B20 token standard to the chain.

The announcement, shared via Base's official X account, frames the date as a target rather than a confirmed deadline. The Beryl upgrade pairs a network-level enhancement with a new token standard, bundling infrastructure changes and developer tooling into a single rollout.

What the Beryl upgrade and B20 token standard bring to Base

The Beryl upgrade represents Base's next named network upgrade, following the project's pattern of incremental improvements to its rollup infrastructure. The B20 token standard ships alongside it, giving developers a new framework for issuing tokens on the chain.

Base's developer blog details the Beryl upgrade as a coordinated effort tying protocol-level changes to the introduction of B20. By packaging both in a single mainnet launch, Base aims to reduce the migration burden for builders who would otherwise need to adapt to sequential updates.

The pairing matters because token standards define how assets behave across wallets, exchanges, and decentralized applications. A new standard launched alongside a network upgrade means developers can build on both simultaneously rather than retrofitting existing contracts. This approach echoes trends seen across layer-2 networks, where projects like Base compete on developer experience as much as throughput, a dynamic visible in how exchanges are expanding support for tokenized asset standards across multiple chains.

Who should watch the June 25 date

Developers building on Base will need to assess compatibility with both the Beryl upgrade and the B20 standard before the target date. Token issuers evaluating Base as a launch chain now have a concrete timeline to plan around, though the "target" framing leaves room for delay.

For users, the upgrade could affect transaction processing and the types of tokens available on Base-native applications. The rollout also carries implications for the broader layer-2 ecosystem, where institutional interest in Ethereum-adjacent infrastructure continues to grow.

Market participants tracking Base activity may look to on-chain metrics in the days surrounding June 25 to gauge adoption. L2Beat's Base overview provides real-time data on the network's transaction volume and total value locked, offering a baseline for measuring any post-upgrade shifts.

The next milestone to watch is whether Base confirms June 25 as a hard date or signals any adjustment. Projects in the stablecoin and institutional custody spaces building on layer-2 networks will be particularly attentive, as upgrade timelines directly affect integration roadmaps.
