Artificial intelligence is taking on a larger role inside major technology companies, and Jack Dorsey’s Block has provided one of the clearest examples yet of how far that shift has progressed.
The company announced that its internal AI platform, known as the Block Builderbot AI tool, now contributes to approximately 15% of all production code changes deployed across the organization.
The disclosure offers a rare look into how AI agents are being integrated into day-to-day software development at a large public company.
According to Block, Builderbot currently performs more than 200,000 operations every day and helps merge roughly 1,500 pull requests each week. The company says the system has become an important part of its engineering workflow rather than simply serving as a coding assistant.
<h2 id="b-why-the-block-builderbot-ai-tool-was-created-b">Why the Block Builderbot AI Tool Was Created&nbsp;</h2>
Most AI coding tools help developers write snippets of code or answer programming questions. Builderbot was created to do much more.
According to Block’s official engineering documentation, the platform acts as an orchestration layer that coordinates multiple AI agents across the company’s software systems.
Instead of operating within a single repository, Builderbot can understand relationships between services, APIs, and internal development standards throughout Block’s entire codebase.
Brad Axen, Head of AI Capabilities at Block, described Builderbot as the missing layer between AI coding tools and how engineering actually works at scale.
The result is a system that can automate many repetitive development tasks while allowing engineers to focus on decision-making, architecture, and product design.

<h2 id="b-block-builderbot-ai-tool-understands-company-code-b">Block Builderbot AI Tool Understands Company Code&nbsp;</h2>
One of the most notable features of the Block Builderbot AI tool is its ability to work across different <a href="https://www.turkishnyradio.com/tokenized-real-world-assets-near-32b-as-treasuries-private-equity-and-payroll-move-onchain/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">business units.</a>
Block explained that an engineer working on Cash App can use Builderbot to make changes to a Square service they have never worked with before because the AI system already understands how that service operates.
This removes a common bottleneck in large organizations where developers often need extensive onboarding before contributing to unfamiliar projects.
The company says this capability helps shorten development cycles and allows new features to reach customers much faster. Tasks that previously required coordination across multiple teams can now move through the development process more efficiently.
<h2 id="b-ai-is-becoming-a-bigger-part-of-software-engineering-b">AI Is Becoming a Bigger Part of Software Engineering</h2>
The announcement arrives as technology companies increasingly rely on AI to support software development.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently said that AI contributes to roughly 75% of new code generated at Google. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella previously stated that AI writes between 20% and 30% of the code used across <a href="https://www.turkishnyradio.com/onchain-advertising-network-from-lg-and-arbitrum-targets-digital-ad-transparency/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Microsoft’s software products.</a>
Spotify has also discussed using internal AI coding agents to support developer productivity. During an earnings call earlier this year, company executives suggested that some engineers were relying heavily on AI-generated code for daily development work.
These examples indicate that AI-generated software is moving beyond experimentation and becoming part of mainstream engineering operations.

<h2 id="b-what-this-means-for-the-future-of-development-b">What This Means for the Future of Development</h2>
The growing use of autonomous coding systems raises important questions about the future role of software engineers.
Block has emphasized that Builderbot is designed to assist engineers rather than replace them. Human developers remain responsible for product direction, quality control, security reviews, and final decision-making.
Still, the scale of Builderbot’s contribution is notable. The fact that the Block Builderbot AI tool already handles around 15% of production code changes suggests that AI systems are beginning to take on responsibilities that were traditionally performed entirely by engineers.
For now, the technology remains under human supervision. However, the latest figures from Block show that AI-native engineering is no longer a future concept. It is already becoming part of how modern software is built and deployed at scale.

<h2 id="strong-glossary-of-key-terms-strong">Glossary of Key Terms</h2>
1. Builderbot Builderbot is Block’s AI-powered assistant for software engineers. It helps with coding tasks, reviews changes, and speeds up development, allowing teams to focus on building better products.
2. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Artificial intelligence, or AI, refers to computer systems that can learn, solve problems, and complete tasks that usually require human thinking. It is designed to make work faster and more efficient.
3. Production Code Production code is the software that customers actually use. When you open an app, make a payment, or use an online service, you are interacting with production code.
4. Codebase A codebase is the full collection of code behind a software product. Think of it as a detailed instruction manual that tells an application exactly how to work.
5. Pull Request A pull request is a way for developers to suggest changes to software. It works much like sharing a document for review before the final version is approved.
6. AI Agent An AI agent is a program that can complete tasks with limited human input. It acts like a digital team member that follows instructions and helps get work done.
7. AI-Native Engineering AI-native engineering is a software development approach where AI is built directly into everyday workflows, helping teams move from ideas to finished products more quickly.
8. Software Development Automation Software development automation uses tools to handle repetitive coding work automatically. This gives engineers more time to focus on creativity, problem-solving, and improving user experiences.
