Crypto Exchange fell sharply in April with the slowing of centralized trading. Spot market trading was at its lowest level since October 2023 and exchanges started to more and more venture into traditional asset related products.

A recent post shared by Wu Blockchain referenced CryptoQuant market data. The report showed centralized spot volume dropping to $679 billion. That marked the lowest monthly level since October 2023.

The chart illustrates a broad contraction across nearly all exchanges. Binance remained the largest contributor throughout the observed period. But there was a drop in the volume on several key trading sites.

Activity was fairly consistent throughout most of 2024. The monthly spot volume was typically between $800 billion to $1.5 trillion. Enrollment continued to be held up by better market conditions.

Trading continued to pick up significantly in late 2024 and early 2025.. Monthly volume eventually reached approximately $2.6 trillion. That period reflected strong engagement across both retail and institutional participants.

The best recovery in recent years was in the area of October 2025. The total volume of all spots rose back up to the $2.0 trillion mark. trillion level. However, that recovery failed to sustain momentum afterward.

Subsequent months produced a steady decline in participation. Activity eventually contracted to the current $679 billion reading. The decline represents a 67% reduction from October 2025 levels.

CryptoQuant data cited by Wu Blockchain also tracked derivatives activity. Perpetual futures volume reportedly fell 53% from previous peaks. The decline therefore extends beyond spot trading markets.

Current conditions suggest speculative participation remains subdued. Retail engagement appears weaker than during previous expansion phases. The trend has affected nearly every major centralized exchange.

As trading activity slowed, exchanges began pursuing additional growth avenues. Several platforms introduced TradFi-style perpetual products. These contracts track assets beyond cryptocurrencies.

Available products now include exposure linked to gold and silver. Some offerings also reference oil, equities, and stock indices. Exchanges are increasingly broadening available trading opportunities.

According to the report, TradFi perpetual volume reached $450 billion. That figure was recorded during March 2026. Precious metals contracts accounted for most recorded activity.

The crypto market is generally in a state of tentative normalization, despite the diminished engagement. The current gains extend the market cap to $2.15 trillion, just short of the all-time high. The trading volume is, however, still low on a day to day basis and the recovery process continues.

Bitcoin continues to be the biggest asset accounting for approximately 58.2% of the market share. Ethereum rallied over 5% in the past session. Despite this, the majority of the major cryptocurrencies are still substantially lower than the past week's prices.

Fear indicators remain elevated despite improving daily price performance. Market participants continue monitoring volume trends closely. Future participation levels may determine the strength of any sustained recovery.
