OpenAI is preparing to roll out a significantly revamped version of ChatGPT in the coming weeks, positioning the chatbot as a ‘super app’ that integrates coding tools and autonomous AI agents, according to a report from the Financial Times. The move marks a strategic shift for the company as it seeks to sharpen its competitive edge against rivals like Anthropic and edge closer to profitability ahead of a potential initial public offering.

From Chat to a Personal Agent

The updated ChatGPT is designed to function as a gateway, drawing free users toward paid products such as Codex, OpenAI’s coding assistant. The company’s ambition is to transform the platform into a central hub where users can manage a wide range of tasks, from software development to daily personal errands, all through a single interface. Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI’s core product and platform, described the vision as creating a product ‘where you have your own personal agent that is capable of helping you … across everything in your life, be it personally or at work.’

This isn’t the first time OpenAI has signaled its super app ambitions. Reports of such plans have circulated since last year, but the Financial Times article adds new detail about the timeline and the company’s internal rationale. In March, The Wall Street Journal reported that the super app strategy represents a major departure from OpenAI’s approach in 2025, when it launched a series of standalone products. Executives now say they are abandoning what they call ‘side quests,’ including the video generator Sora, to focus on this unified platform.

Why This Matters for the AI Market

The shift comes as OpenAI faces mounting pressure from competitors like Anthropic, which has gained traction among business customers with its Claude model. By consolidating its offerings into a single, powerful app, OpenAI aims to increase user engagement and conversion rates, moving beyond the freemium model that has driven its growth so far. The company’s path to profitability is a key concern for investors, especially as the cost of training and running large language models remains high. A successful super app could generate recurring revenue from subscriptions and usage fees, strengthening OpenAI’s financial position before an IPO.

The internal declaration from one senior OpenAI employee that ‘Chat is dead’ underscores the company’s belief that the era of simple text-based chatbots is giving way to more complex, agent-driven interactions. This evolution reflects broader industry trends, as companies like Google and Microsoft also invest heavily in AI agents capable of performing multi-step tasks autonomously.

Conclusion

OpenAI’s plan to turn ChatGPT into a super app represents a pivotal moment for the company and the broader AI industry. By integrating coding tools and AI agents into a single platform, OpenAI is betting that users will pay for a comprehensive, personalized assistant rather than a collection of standalone tools. The success of this strategy will depend on execution, user adoption, and the ability to maintain a competitive edge against well-funded rivals. For now, the coming weeks will offer the first real test of whether this vision can become reality.
