What Is Capture?

Capture is a professional-grade lighting design, documentation, and visualization platform built for lighting designers, production managers, event planners, and touring professionals working in concerts, theater, television, festivals, and corporate events. Developed by Capture Visualisation AB in Sweden, the software has been an industry standard for over a decade and receives annual version releases.

The platform combines three core disciplines in one application: design (2D plots and 3D layouts), documentation (automatically generated reports and fixture schedules), and visualization (real-time and rendered previews with accurate photometric and color data). This all-in-one approach distinguishes Capture from tools that focus exclusively on one of these areas.

Capture 2026 is the current release, with new features focused on UI modernization and rendering quality improvements.

Capture 2026: What’s New

The 2026 release focuses on two main areas: user interface modernization and rendering quality.

UI Improvements: Following the replacement of Windows and macOS property lists with Capture’s own implementation in 2025, the 2026 release extends this work to property tables — the foundation of the Fixtures tab and the Layers category in the Design tab. The result is a faster, more consistent editing experience across platforms, with improved fixture manipulation and universe/layer management.

Rendering Enhancements:

New smoke visualization — more realistic atmospheric haze effects for stage environments

Improved bloom — better light-bleed simulation around bright sources

New lens flare effect — adds photographic realism to rendering output

Tweakable image settings — exposure, contrast, and color grading controls directly in the render view

These changes make Capture 2026 renders more competitive with high-end visualization tools while maintaining the real-time performance the software is known for.

Core Features

Design

Capture provides a fully integrated 2D/3D design environment. Users work in top-down plan views (2D) and perspective 3D simultaneously, with fixtures, trusses, LED panels, video projectors, and stage scenery placed from a comprehensive built-in library. The workflow mirrors CAD drafting conventions, making it accessible to anyone with technical drawing experience — but drag-and-drop fixture placement removes the steep learning curve of dedicated CAD tools.

Key design capabilities include fixture grouping, focus planes, XYZ positioning with numeric input, and full layer management for complex multi-element productions.

Documentation

Capture auto-generates reports from the live design data, ensuring documentation stays synchronized with the actual rig. Reports can include fixture schedules, DMX patch lists, channel assignments, address listings, and custom layouts. The redesigned report editor in recent versions allows virtually any report format to be produced without manual data entry.

This is a critical time-saving feature for touring and installation projects where accurate paperwork is a professional requirement.

Visualization

Capture’s rendering engine is built on a DirectX (Windows) and Metal (macOS) native pipeline using a wide-color ACEScg color space, delivering outstanding photometric accuracy. Lighting output simulations use manufacturer-supplied photometric data, so beam angles, color temperatures, and output levels match real-world fixture behavior.

Renders can be output as high-resolution still images or video files. Capture also exports interactive standalone presentations — a unique feature allowing clients or collaborators to explore the 3D design in full interactivity without needing the software installed.

Connectivity

Capture offers deep integration with physical lighting consoles and control systems:

DMX talkback — allows the console to focus fixtures directly in the software

CITP — console integration for fixture selection and patch exchange

ArtNet and sACN — standard protocols for live DMX control

Avolites consoles — Capture is integrated natively as the default visualizer

Capture Mobile — companion app for reviewing designs on mobile devices

Capture Component — embeddable version for integration into third-party applications

Capture Edition Comparison and Pricing

Capture uses a perpetual license model with four editions, differentiated primarily by the number of DMX universes, video feeds, and laser feeds supported:

Upgrade pricing: Upgrades to Capture 2026 are priced identically regardless of which previous version you own — whether Capture 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, or 2025. This “rolling 5-year upgrade window” makes Capture exceptionally cost-effective for professionals who don’t need to upgrade every year. Upgrade costs are typically 10–25% of the new license price.

Upgrade between editions is priced as the difference between new license prices (e.g., upgrading from Solo to Duet costs the difference between €395 and €795 = €400).

Each license is personal and allows installation on two computers owned by the license holder.

No mandatory subscription — once purchased, the license remains valid indefinitely on supported hardware.
