The history of MEXC is, in many ways, the history of a particular bet placed on what crypto traders would want next. In 2018, when the exchange first appeared under the name MXC, the market was dominated by a handful of large platforms with conservative listing policies and trading fees that rewarded the venue more than the user. A small team registered in Seychelles, with founding figures Sheen Xin Hu, Aaron Wagener, and Piotr Brzezinski, set out to do the opposite. They wanted an exchange that would list new tokens fast, keep fees low, and give active traders the kind of leverage that established platforms were already pulling back from.
That positioning defined the first two years. While larger exchanges tightened their token review processes, MXC became known in Asian trading communities as the venue where new altcoins arrived first. Aggressive marketing, frequent listing events, and a continuously expanding asset selection brought millions of users to the platform within the first 24 months of operation. Singapore and the broader APAC region formed the early base, but the company's ambitions were already global.
The pivot toward serious infrastructure came in 2019. That year MXC launched what it called a global compliance strategy, and within a short window obtained money transmitter registrations in Estonia and the United States. The following year added compliance milestones in Australia, Canada, and Switzerland. For an exchange that had built its reputation on speed and altcoin listings, the licensing push signalled a second phase. The platform was no longer just trying to capture trading volume from active retail. It was trying to become a credible long-term venue.
Also in 2019 came the MX Token, the ERC-20 utility asset that would eventually anchor much of the platform's ecosystem economics. Initially designed as a fee-discount and voting token with an initial supply of 1 billion units, MX evolved over the following years into the central deflationary instrument of the exchange. By November 2021 the team had burned 550 million MX tokens. Starting in January 2022, MEXC committed 40 percent of quarterly platform profits to ongoing buybacks and burns from the secondary market, a mechanism that has continued to compress circulating supply ever since.
The most visible transformation came on June 8, 2021, when the exchange officially rebranded from MXC to MEXC Global. The change coincided with John Chen, a Singaporean businessman with a background in medtech and fintech startups, stepping into the role of CEO. Chen had previously founded eBeeCare, a healthcare network later acquired by Raffles Medical Group, and helped build out APAC fintech operations at iTechBlack. His academic background includes a Master's in Biomathematics and Computational Biology from Nanyang Technological University and a Bachelor's in Computer Science from the National University of Singapore.
In one interview during this period, Chen described his approach in a way that captured the company's tone at the time, saying "MEXC is continuously pushing boundaries, while holding on to its values and beliefs." Under his leadership, the exchange began positioning itself explicitly as a global alternative to the largest centralized venues rather than as a regional altcoin platform.
The years between 2022 and 2024 were defined by product diversification. The platform expanded into perpetual futures with leverage that reached, in certain markets, up to 500x, well above what most major competitors offered. It introduced copy trading, which let less experienced users mirror the positions of higher-volume traders on the platform. The Launchpad and Kickstarter programs gave the MX token a clear utility, allowing holders to vote on new listings and access early-stage token sales. M-Day, a lottery-based airdrop mechanism, and MX-DeFi, a staking program with on-chain rewards, rounded out the ecosystem. Toward the end of this period, MEXC built DEX+, a hybrid product that routes orders through decentralized exchange liquidity while preserving the execution speed of a centralized matching engine.
The breakout year was 2025. According to data the company published in February 2026, MEXC recorded $1.5 trillion in spot trading volume across the year, captured 7.8 percent of the global centralized exchange market, and finished in third place among centralized venues. The 90.9 percent year-over-year growth rate stood out sharply against an industry average of 7.6 percent. December 2025 alone brought $86 billion in monthly spot volume. The user base passed 40 million across more than 170 countries, and the catalog of supported assets grew to over 3,000 cryptocurrencies. Vugar Usi, then serving as Chief Operating Officer, said in a statement accompanying the results that "we are proud to stand among the top three fastest-growing exchanges" in a year when much of the industry struggled to expand.
A large part of that growth has been attributed to the platform's zero-fee policy on a substantial portion of its trading pairs. Where most major exchanges have continued to refine tiered fee structures, MEXC moved aggressively in the opposite direction, extending zero-fee promotions across hundreds of spot and futures markets. According to internal figures the company shared in early 2026, the model has returned more than one billion dollars to users over the trailing twelve months. The strategy is paired with a focus on retail. Industry data suggests that institutions account for around 80 percent of volume at most large competitors, while MEXC reports that more than 90 percent of its 40 million users are retail traders.
Speaking at a CoinGecko meetup in early February 2026, Vugar Usi articulated the philosophy that has shaped the platform's positioning, telling the audience that "it's not about how many users there are, it's about the trading volumes." The exchange has also pointed to its Guardian Fund, a one hundred million dollar reserve set aside to backstop user assets in the event of operational incidents, as a further signal of its retail orientation.
The leadership transition came on April 8, 2026, when MEXC marked its eighth anniversary by appointing Vugar Usi Zade as Chief Executive Officer. His path to the role was unusual by industry standards. He had previously led content and partnerships at BeInCrypto, where he hosted a podcast called Usi The Talk, before moving into operations at Bitget, where as Chief Operating Officer he helped the exchange grow into the global top five. He joined MEXC as COO in late 2025 and was elevated to CEO five months later. In his announcement, Usi Zade described the moment in markets that he believed the exchange was built for, writing that "markets are moving faster than ever. Asset classes are converging."
His CEO letter, published on the company's blog under the slogan "0 Fees, Infinite Opportunities," laid out a roadmap that pushes MEXC beyond pure cryptocurrency trading. The platform plans to integrate MT5-based assets, enabling users to trade tokenized equities, foreign exchange pairs, and other traditional instruments alongside their crypto positions. The exchange's Prediction Market platform, launched in beta on March 16, 2026, sits in the same broader vision, letting users take positions on real-world outcomes ranging from geopolitical developments to crypto industry milestones.
Usi Zade has been openly philosophical about the convergence happening across asset classes. In an April 2026 interview with CoinDesk, he offered a striking explanation for the decline in pure memecoin trading volumes, suggesting that "everything has kind of become a meme at this point." Gold reacts to a single political statement, oil to a geopolitical rumour, equities to a Federal Reserve headline. The volatility and narrative-driven behaviour that once distinguished crypto, in his framing, has now spread through every major financial market.
The exchange today operates as MEXC Official, the latest iteration of a brand that has rebranded twice and survived multiple market cycles since 2018. Its trajectory, from a Seychelles-registered altcoin venue to a top-three global exchange handling more than a trillion dollars in annual volume, supported by a team that has grown past 2,000 employees and a user base of more than 40 million across 170 countries, is one of the more striking growth stories in crypto infrastructure over the past several years.
