If you trade stocks on Robinhood, Fidelity, or anywhere else, the app where your BTC lives just turned into a brokerage. Coinbase launched commission-free trading on more than 8,000 stocks and ETFs for all US customers, with markets open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week — meaning you can buy Apple at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday from the same app you use to swap ETH. The real question isn't whether it works (it does) but whether the convenience of one app for crypto and stocks outweighs the things Coinbase doesn't yet do.

The headline is "free 24/5 stocks". The story is that retail finance is collapsing into a single interface, and Coinbase is making the same play Robinhood made when it added staking — except in reverse.

What Coinbase actually launched

Three things. Zero-commission trading on 8,000+ stocks and ETFs — the same fee structure Robinhood made famous in 2015. 24/5 trading hours — markets open Sunday evening to Friday evening, with the standard weekend pause. A Yahoo Finance content partnership built into the interface so you don't bounce out to research a name. Orders settle through Coinbase Securities, a registered broker-dealer.

What's not there yet: tokenised stocks. Coinbase has flagged "Coinbase Tokenize" — its institutional tokenisation platform for RWAs including equities — as the next product. The case for stocks on Coinbase strengthens when those stocks become tokenised on-chain assets in your wallet. Today they're custodied at the broker like any normal brokerage account.

What this means for your account

If you already have BTC or ETH on Coinbase and you're also paying $0 to trade stocks at Robinhood, the question is whether you'd rather keep one less app open. For long-term holders who rebalance occasionally, consolidating onto Coinbase is straightforward — the same dashboard, the same tax export, the same one login. For active traders, the 24/5 hours are genuinely useful: when Bitcoin ETFs see a $1 billion weekly outflow on a Sunday evening, you can rebalance the underlying IBIT or FBTC position immediately rather than waiting for Monday's open.

For Robinhood loyalists, the practical answer depends on options. Coinbase did not launch options trading alongside stocks at this go-live, and Robinhood's options product is a meaningful piece of why some retail users stay there. If you trade options, you're not migrating yet.

The tax-and-records angle

One quiet upside of doing both crypto and stocks at Coinbase is unified tax reporting. The 1099-DA crypto form and the standard 1099-B stock form arrive from the same broker, with the same cost-basis lots, and the same year-end summary — which materially reduces the reconciliation work for active traders. If you previously juggled Coinbase 1099-DA plus Robinhood 1099-B plus a wallet export through Koinly, doing both inside Coinbase compresses that to a single workflow.

The catch: if you have years of stock-trading history at Fidelity or Schwab, transferring positions over loses the broker-held cost-basis chain unless you do an ACATS in-kind transfer — the same cost-basis reconciliation pattern applies as with the new 1099-DA crypto reporting. Selling and re-buying is a taxable event for every position.

What Coinbase isn't yet

Three gaps to know about. No options trading. No retirement-account integration (Schwab and Fidelity both let you trade inside IRAs; Coinbase doesn't yet). No after-the-2026-cycle confidence about the staff and roadmap, since the broader retail-finance app race is fluid. Robinhood is responding with its own crypto-staking, prediction-market, and tokenised-equities expansion; Schwab launched spot BTC/ETH; Morgan Stanley put crypto on E*Trade. The competitive shape is moving fast.

What to do today

Three steps. First, if you mostly hold crypto and trade stocks occasionally, enable the stock-trading feature inside Coinbase and try it on one small position before migrating anything. Second, if you actively trade options, stay where you are — Coinbase is not yet a substitute. Third, if you maintain a brokerage account at Fidelity or Schwab with significant cost-basis history, do not sell to migrate; use ACATS in-kind transfer instead. Free 24/5 stocks is a meaningful product, not a paradigm shift — yet. The day Coinbase Tokenize goes live and stocks become on-chain assets you actually own, the question changes entirely.
