Bybit CEO Ben Zhou explained why the cryptocurrency exchange chose not to renew its Formula 1 sponsorship, describing the decision as a deliberate shift in marketing strategy during an April 23 interview on the When Shift Happens podcast.

In an April 23 episode of When Shift Happens, Zhou addressed the Bybit F1 sponsorship non-renewal directly. The interview covered multiple topics around Bybit's trajectory, but the sponsorship decision stood out as a key revelation.
Zhou indicated the choice not to renew was strategic rather than forced. The exchange had maintained one of the more visible crypto-F1 partnerships, making the walkaway notable at a time when institutional players like Morgan Stanley are increasing their bitcoin exposure.
The interview suggested that Bybit's leadership reassessed how effectively the F1 deal converted global visibility into measurable user acquisition, a calculus that appears to have shifted against renewal.

Formula 1 sponsorships offer unmatched global broadcast reach, with races aired in over 180 countries. For crypto exchanges competing for mainstream recognition, F1 deals served as a shortcut to legitimacy during previous bull cycles.
Bybit stepping away suggests the exchange is prioritizing return on investment over raw brand exposure. The shift comes as the broader digital asset industry evolves, with developments like CME preparing bitcoin volatility futures signaling that institutional infrastructure, not sports branding, is becoming the competitive battleground.
Zhou's willingness to discuss the reasoning publicly, as documented in Follonier's coverage of the full interview, points to a CEO framing budget discipline as strength rather than retreat.
The non-renewal may also reflect how exchanges are now competing on product depth and regulatory positioning rather than logo placement. Companies across the sector, including those raising large funding rounds like Digital Asset, are directing capital toward infrastructure and compliance rather than mass-market advertising.
