Degen

Pavel Durov just made the most significant announcement in TON’s history — and the market responded immediately. Telegram, the world’s largest messaging app with over one billion users, is officially replacing the TON Foundation as the primary driving force behind The Open Network blockchain.
TON’s price jumped from $1.34 to $2.49 within hours of the announcement — a move of more than 85% — as the community processed what vertical integration between the world’s dominant crypto-native messenger and its underlying blockchain actually means.
<blockquote>
 “Next step — Telegram replaces the TON Foundation as the driving force behind TON and becomes its largest validator,” Durov <a href="https://t.me/durov/501" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">wrote</a> in his Telegram channel, framing the move as step 3 of 7 in his ongoing Make TON Great Again roadmap.
</blockquote>
This is not a partnership announcement. It is not a strategic alignment. Telegram is taking direct operational control of TON — and the implications for the ecosystem are significant enough that even long-time skeptics are paying attention.
What Is Actually Changing
The transition is comprehensive. Telegram becomes TON’s largest validator — a structural shift that changes the network’s governance dynamics entirely. Where the TON Foundation previously operated as an independent entity driving development, Telegram now steps in as both the primary builder and the primary validator, with full accountability for the network’s direction.
Durov framed this as a positive for decentralization rather than a contradiction of it. With Telegram as the dominant validator, other major institutional players can join the validator pool without any single entity gaining outsized centralized control — Telegram acts as the counterbalance that keeps the network honest.
The economics of validation are also <a href="https://t.me/durov/502" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">becoming</a> more attractive: TON validation currently offers more than 20% APR, meaning more TON gets locked up as validators compete, reducing circulating supply and creating structural price support.
On the technical side, the transition includes a complete overhaul of TON’s infrastructure. A new ton.org website, new developer tools, and a new wave of performance upgrades are all scheduled for release within two to three weeks. The focus, as Durov explicitly stated, shifts to technical superiority — not messaging, not partnerships, not ecosystem narratives, but raw engineering performance.
Transaction fees have already dropped six times as part of the ongoing MTONGA upgrades, bringing costs to nearly zero. Combined with the sub-second finality that Catchain 2.0 delivered in April, TON is now faster and cheaper than at any point in its history — arriving at exactly the moment Telegram is taking direct control of its development.
Why the Community Is Taking This Seriously
For a long time, the relationship between Telegram and TON was arm’s length by design. The TON Foundation operated independently, and Telegram’s involvement was more philosophical than operational. That distance was a source of persistent frustration for the community, which repeatedly pointed to a lack of professionalism and execution pace from the Foundation as reasons the ecosystem wasn’t growing as fast as its distribution advantage suggested it should.
Telegram has one billion users. It has integrated wallets, Mini Apps, crypto gifts, tokenized usernames and numbers, and a payments infrastructure that is already live for hundreds of millions of people. The blockchain that underlies all of that never had the full weight of Telegram’s operational capability behind it. That changes now.
The community’s reaction has been notably different from previous TON announcements. This isn’t excitement about a roadmap item or a partnership that may or may not materialize. This is Durov announcing, in plain language, that Telegram is taking the wheel — with a two to three week timeline for the first visible changes. Concrete, accountable, and coming from the person who built the app.
The Door Opening for the Degen Community
One dimension of the announcement that has generated significant discussion is what the combination of near-zero fees and sub-second speeds means for the more speculative end of the crypto ecosystem. With fees essentially eliminated and transaction finality measured in fractions of a second, TON is now technically capable of supporting the kind of high-frequency memecoin and DeFi activity that has driven enormous volume on Solana and Base.
The degen community — the traders, launchers, and speculators who move between ecosystems chasing the best infrastructure for fast, cheap, high-volume activity — has largely passed on TON in previous cycles. The infrastructure wasn’t fast enough or cheap enough to make it competitive. That argument is now significantly harder to make. Whether the community follows the infrastructure is the open question, but the technical barrier has been removed.
Context: A Year That Almost Broke TON
The 85% price move needs context. TON hit an all-time high above $7 in 2024, riding the wave of the Telegram Mini App boom when developers flooded the ecosystem and retail attention peaked. What followed was a sustained decline that bottomed near $0.55 during an October flash crash.
The recovery since that low has been gradual. The Catchain 2.0 speed upgrade in April produced a modest price reaction. The Durov announcement is the first catalyst that has generated the kind of response comparable to the 2024 bull period — not because the price recovered to previous highs, but because the structural argument for TON has changed in a way that previous announcements couldn’t match.
Previously, the case for TON rested on Telegram’s distribution — the argument that having a billion users adjacent to the blockchain would eventually drive adoption. That argument was always dependent on Telegram actually building the bridge. With this announcement, Telegram has confirmed it is building that bridge itself, on its own timeline, with its own engineering resources, and with full accountability for the result.
What Comes Next
Durov has been explicit that this is step 3 of 7. Four more upgrades remain on the MTONGA roadmap, and the two to three week window for new developer tools and performance upgrades gives the market a concrete near-term deliverable to evaluate. If those ship on time and deliver measurable improvement, the narrative momentum from this announcement extends significantly.
For TON holders, developers, and the broader ecosystem, the transition from TON Foundation to Telegram as the driving force is the most consequential structural change in the network’s history. The foundation was independent but limited. Telegram is neither — and that combination of capability and commitment is what the community has been waiting for since the blockchain launched.
