Israel has declared it is fully prepared to resume military operations against Iran, pending final approval from the United States. Defense Minister Israel Katz made the announcement on April 23, 2025, following a high-level situation assessment meeting in Tel Aviv. This statement marks a significant escalation in rhetoric and signals a potential shift from diplomatic tensions to direct confrontation. The development has sent shockwaves through global markets and raised alarms across the Middle East.

Israel’s Military Preparations for War with Iran

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that all necessary military preparations are now complete. He stated that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have finalized operational plans and deployed assets in strategic positions. The announcement follows months of covert operations and intelligence gathering. Israeli officials have repeatedly warned that Iran’s nuclear program poses an existential threat. Now, they say, the window for diplomatic resolution is closing rapidly.

The Israeli military has reportedly moved advanced missile defense systems to northern borders. Air force units have conducted extensive drills simulating strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Ground forces have also increased readiness along the Golan Heights. These moves demonstrate a coordinated effort to project force across multiple domains. Analysts believe Israel is preparing for a multi-front conflict that could involve Hezbollah and other proxies.

F-35I Adir stealth fighter squadrons placed on high alert

Submarine fleet reportedly moved to strategic positions in the Red Sea

Cyber warfare units conducting offensive operations against Iranian infrastructure

U.S. Role and Approval Process

The United States remains the critical gatekeeper for any major Israeli military action against Iran. Defense Minister Katz explicitly stated that Israel awaits U.S. approval before proceeding. This reflects the deep strategic coordination between the two allies. Washington has historically provided intelligence, logistical support, and diplomatic cover for Israeli operations. However, the Biden administration has urged restraint and emphasized diplomatic solutions.

U.S. officials have not publicly confirmed receipt of Israel’s request for approval. Behind closed doors, American and Israeli defense teams are in constant communication. The Pentagon has reinforced its naval presence in the Persian Gulf as a precautionary measure. Any green light from Washington would likely come with strict conditions on the scope and duration of operations. A denial could strain bilateral relations and force Israel to act unilaterally.

Regional Implications and Escalation Risks

A war between Israel and Iran would have catastrophic consequences for the entire Middle East. Iran’s network of proxies spans Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. Hezbollah alone possesses an estimated 150,000 rockets capable of striking Israeli cities. Iran could also disrupt global oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. The humanitarian toll would be severe, with millions potentially displaced.

Neighboring countries are already preparing for fallout. Jordan and Saudi Arabia have increased air defense readiness. The United Arab Emirates has issued travel warnings. European nations have urged both sides to de-escalate. The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency session. Diplomatic channels remain open, but time is running short.

Potential Conflict Scenarios

Limited airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, similar to operations against Iraq and Syria

Full-scale war involving ground incursions and proxy forces across multiple fronts

Cyber warfare targeting Iranian power grids, banking systems, and military networks

Naval confrontation in the Persian Gulf, threatening global oil shipping lanes

Expert Analysis and Strategic Context

Military analysts view Israel’s announcement as a calculated message to both Iran and the international community. Dr. Emily Landau, a senior fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies, describes it as a ‘strategic signal’ designed to increase pressure. She notes that Israel has used similar tactics before, particularly in the lead-up to the 1981 Osirak strike and the 2007 bombing of a Syrian reactor.

Former IDF intelligence chief Amos Yadlin argues that Israel’s military readiness is genuine but not necessarily imminent. He points out that the U.S. approval condition creates a deliberate pause. This allows time for last-minute diplomacy while keeping military options on the table. The Iranian regime, meanwhile, has responded with threats of its own. Tehran has warned that any attack would trigger a ‘devastating response’ targeting Israel’s infrastructure and allies.

Conclusion

Israel’s declaration of readiness to resume war with Iran represents a critical juncture in Middle Eastern geopolitics. The ball now lies in Washington’s court. Whether the United States grants approval or pushes for restraint will determine the next phase of this escalating crisis. The world watches with bated breath as diplomatic efforts compete with military preparations. The coming days will reveal whether the region slides into another devastating conflict or finds a path back to stability.

FAQs

Q1: Why is Israel preparing for war with Iran now?
A1: Israel cites Iran’s advancing nuclear program and recent proxy attacks as the primary reasons. Defense officials believe the window for effective military action is closing as Iran enriches uranium closer to weapons-grade levels.

Q2: What role does the United States play in this conflict?
A2: The U.S. is Israel’s closest ally and provides military, intelligence, and diplomatic support. Israel has stated it will not proceed with major operations without American approval, reflecting the deep strategic partnership between the two nations.

Q3: How would a war affect global oil prices?
A3: A conflict could disrupt oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil passes. Analysts predict prices could spike above $150 per barrel, triggering a global economic slowdown.

Q4: Can Iran defend itself against an Israeli attack?
A4: Iran possesses a layered air defense system, including Russian-made S-300s and domestically developed systems. It also has ballistic missiles capable of striking Israel. However, Israeli air superiority and advanced stealth technology give it a significant offensive advantage.

Q5: What are the chances of a diplomatic resolution?
A5: Diplomatic channels remain active, with European and Gulf states mediating. However, the gap between Israel’s demand for a complete halt to Iran’s nuclear program and Iran’s refusal to negotiate under pressure makes a peaceful resolution increasingly unlikely in the short term.
