Protocol now accommodates consumption-based billing for AI computing services

Users can establish spending limits while paying only for actual resource usage

Gas-free transaction feature enhances accessibility for developers

Update seeks to reverse declining engagement on x402 network

Coinbase has introduced significant enhancements to the x402 protocol by incorporating Upto, a new pricing framework designed for variable, consumption-driven payments in AI service environments. This modification replaces the previous static fee structure with adaptive pricing that reflects real compute resource utilization. The transformation enables x402 to more effectively accommodate autonomous AI operations and fluctuating service demands.

Upto Implementation Brings Dynamic Pricing to x402

Coinbase has deployed the Upto framework to advance payment adaptability within x402. This enhancement allows service providers to bill clients according to genuine resource consumption instead of predetermined fixed rates. Consequently, x402 can now facilitate AI operations with variable costs including machine learning inference and database queries.

Previously, x402 mandated precise payment amounts before processing requests, creating obstacles in environments requiring flexibility. The revised approach permits users to set maximum expenditure thresholds for individual requests. The platform then calculates and charges only the actual cost incurred upon task completion.

This advancement boosts transaction efficiency and eliminates pricing discrepancies across different services. Moreover, application developers gain the ability to create solutions where billing directly corresponds to real-time computational demands. These improvements position x402 as a more robust payment infrastructure for emerging AI-powered platforms.

Addressing Fixed-Price Constraints in x402 Framework

The original x402 architecture imposed uniform pricing regardless of task complexity. This meant users frequently overpaid for straightforward operations or underpaid for resource-intensive processes. The Upto framework eliminates this constraint by matching payments with genuine service requirements.

Within the redesigned system, service providers establish maximum pricing parameters while purchasers authorize spending ceilings. Subsequently, servers determine final charges based on consumption indicators such as processing duration or token utilization. x402 now delivers precise invoicing and eliminates payment inefficiencies in AI service transactions.

The protocol additionally incorporates gas-free transactions via the CDP Facilitator. This capability streamlines user experience and reduces adoption friction. These enhancements make x402 significantly more viable for enterprise-scale AI and data-intensive implementations.

x402 Secures Industry Support Despite Usage Decline

The Linux Foundation has assumed governance of x402 following its transition from Coinbase oversight. Concurrently, technology giants including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services provide developmental support through the x402 Foundation. This collaboration demonstrates substantial industry commitment to autonomous commerce infrastructure.

However, x402 engagement has diminished throughout 2026 after reaching its zenith in late 2025. Weekly transaction volumes plummeted from millions to under one million in early 2026. Additionally, activity contracted to approximately 100,000 transactions by the end of March.

The Upto enhancement targets renewed expansion by broadening application scenarios. It positions x402 to serve demanding AI environments requiring adaptive and rapid payment processing. Therefore, the protocol stands positioned to recapture momentum as autonomous commerce continues advancing.
