In a significant move toward user-controlled social media, the team behind Bluesky has unveiled Attie, a groundbreaking AI application that empowers users to design their own algorithms and create custom feeds through simple conversation. Announced at the Atmosphere conference in San Francisco on April 30, this standalone product represents a strategic pivot for the decentralized social platform, leveraging Anthropic’s Claude AI to put algorithmic control directly into users’ hands.

Bluesky AI Attie Transforms Social Media Customization

Attie marks a departure from traditional social media applications by functioning as an AI assistant rather than another network. The application allows users to build personalized content feeds using natural language commands, similar to chatting with contemporary AI chatbots. This innovation addresses growing concerns about algorithmic transparency and user agency in digital spaces.

Interim CEO Toni Schneider emphasized the product’s distinct nature in recent statements. “It’s a new product — it’s not a part of the Bluesky app,” Schneider explained. “We’ve launched many features within Bluesky, but Attie represents our first standalone application built by Jay Graber’s new innovation team.”

The technical foundation relies on Bluesky’s underlying AT Protocol (atproto), which enables data portability across applications. Users authenticate with their existing Atmosphere login credentials, granting Attie immediate understanding of their interests and conversation history within the open ecosystem.

How Attie’s AI-Powered Feed Creation Works

Attie’s functionality centers on conversational interface design. Users can ask the AI assistant questions about content preferences, request post recommendations, or instruct it to curate feeds based on specific themes. The system then generates customized content streams that become accessible across any application built on the AT Protocol.

Key features include:

Natural Language Processing: Users type commands in everyday language without coding knowledge

Cross-Application Integration: Created feeds work within Bluesky and other atproto apps

Personalization Engine: AI understands user preferences through existing ecosystem data

Future Development: Planned “vibe-coding” capabilities for building custom social applications

Schneider highlighted the philosophical approach behind the technology. “It is an AI product, but it’s very people-focused,” he noted. “We believe AI represents powerful technology, but we want to ensure it builds things that genuinely benefit people.”

Leadership Transition and Strategic Vision

The application’s development coincided with significant leadership changes at Bluesky. Former CEO Jay Graber transitioned to Chief Innovation Officer several months ago, dedicating her efforts to product development rather than company operations. Schneider revealed that Graber recognized her desire to focus on building rather than managing.

“As she spent more time freed from operational duties, it became clear that building represents her happy place,” Schneider stated. “She’s an amazing leader and visionary, and we want her creating more innovations rather than worrying about daily company operations.”

Graber articulated the philosophical foundation driving Attie’s development. “Today, major platforms use AI to serve themselves, not their users,” she observed. “They aim to increase engagement time, harvest data, and control algorithms. We believe AI should serve people, not platforms. An open protocol places this power directly in users’ hands.”

Funding Stability and Future Roadmap

Bluesky recently secured $100 million in additional funding from a round that closed last year, providing the company with approximately three years of operational runway. This financial stability signals long-term commitment to the ecosystem’s development while enabling the team to address complex challenges.

Schneider specifically addressed community concerns about cryptocurrency integration, despite backing from multiple crypto investors. “Our investors appreciate decentralization principles,” he clarified. “They supported blockchain projects because of their decentralized nature. Bluesky represents decentralized social media, which aligns with their belief in platform and ecosystem opportunities.”

The company explicitly denies plans for crypto integration, alleviating user concerns about potential scams or payment tool implementations. Instead, Bluesky explores alternative monetization approaches, including potential subscription models and hosting services for community management.

Ecosystem Growth and WordPress Parallels

Drawing from his experience as former CEO of Automattic (WordPress.com’s parent company), Schneider sees parallels between the WordPress ecosystem and Atmosphere’s potential. “At the center exists a completely open system where anyone can participate,” he explained. “You can have independent, decentralized components working together harmoniously.”

WordPress evolved into a massive ecosystem with over $10 billion flowing through it annually despite its decentralized nature. Schneider envisions similar growth potential for the Atmosphere protocol. “We hope Atmosphere develops comparable ability for numerous applications and services to coexist, collaborate, and build a vibrant ecosystem,” he concluded.

Conclusion

Bluesky AI Attie represents a significant innovation in social media personalization, shifting algorithmic control from platforms to users through intuitive AI assistance. By leveraging the open AT Protocol and natural language processing, the application democratizes feed creation while maintaining philosophical commitment to user-centric design. With substantial funding ensuring development continuity and clear strategic vision from leadership, Attie positions Bluesky at the forefront of decentralized social media evolution. As the application enters private beta testing with Atmosphere conference attendees, its success could redefine how users interact with and control their social media experiences.
