DeFi today has a structural flaw: its default setting, information, and actions are public.
Every intended trade, every liquidation threshold, and every wallet balance is visible globally, before, during, and after execution. While transparency was necessary to build initial trust, it has created a massive economic attack surface.
This visibility is the raw material for MEV (Maximum Extractable Value). It is an invisible tax where bots front-run, back-run, and "sandwich" trades because they can see intent before it happens. This isn't theoretical; it is a multi-million dollar industry of value extraction that thrives purely on the fact that your strategy is public.
For DeFi to evolve from "public experiments" to real financial infrastructure, we are missing a critical layer: Confidentiality.
Confidential DeFi isn't about secrecy for secrecy’s sake. It is about moving from "radical transparency" to "selective disclosure." Here is what that actually means, and why it is a prerequisite for the next stage of scale.

Financial Privacy is a Requirement for Capital

Serious capital, institutions, market makers, and professional funds, cannot operate efficiently on current DeFi rails.
In traditional finance, no entity broadcasts their inventory, risk tolerances, or rebalancing schedule to the world before executing. Doing so in DeFi is operational suicide.

If the market knows exactly where a liquidation point is, predatory traders will hunt it.

If they see a large position moving, they will front-run it.

Without confidentiality, participants are forced to choose between the composability of DeFi and protecting their edge. Until this is fixed, "Institutional DeFi" remains impractical.

Compliance and Confidentiality Are Not Opposites

There is a false narrative that you must choose between privacy and compliance.
Modern privacy tech supports selective disclosure: the ability to prove a statement without revealing the underlying data. For example, proving "I pass the AML rule" without exposing your identity to the public internet. This is the only path to a "regulated-compatible DeFi" that doesn't revert to full surveillance finance.

What Exactly is "Confidential"?

A common misconception is that "confidential" equals "opaque." That is wrong. The system still needs verifiability. We need to think about confidentiality in three distinct layers:
1. Orderflow Confidentiality (Hiding Intent)

Goal: Stop MEV opportunities that depend on pre-trade visibility.

Reality: When a user clicks "swap," the world shouldn't know what they are buying until the trade is executed. Hiding this intent neutralizes sandwich attacks.

2. State Confidentiality (Hiding Positions)

Goal: Stop liquidation hunting, portfolio copy-trading, and strategy leakage.

Reality: Exact collateral ratios shouldn't be public info. Users should be able to lend and borrow without painting a target on their backs.

3. Logic & Data Confidentiality (Hiding the "Secret Sauce")

Goal: Enable private strategies and data-driven underwriting.

Reality: This allows for private vault logic (hiding alpha-generating strategies) or using off-chain data (like real-world credit scores) to facilitate an on-chain loan without revealing the raw data.

The Tech Toolbox

We are finally at a point where the cryptography and hardware exist to make this practical. It is important to distinguish the right tool for the right job:
Confidential Computing / TEEs (Trusted Execution Environments)

What it does: Protects code and data while in use inside a hardware-isolated environment.

Best for: Fast, general-purpose confidential execution and complex logic. (This is where iExec specializes, bridging Web2 compute power with Web3 trust).

Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK)

What it does: Proves the correctness of rules without revealing underlying inputs.

Best for: Selective disclosure, private state transitions, and compliance proofs.

Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE)

What it does: Allows computation directly on encrypted data.

Best for: Encrypted smart-contract style computation.

Secure MPC (Multi-Party Computation)

What it does: Multiple parties jointly compute outcomes without revealing inputs to each other.

Best for: Distributed custody, RFQ systems, and threshold control.

ZK, FHE, and MPC provide cryptographic confidentiality, while TEEs provide execution confidentiality.
Real-World Use Cases
When we implement these layers, we unlock a new category of on-chain finance:

MEV-Resistant Swaps: Private routing to eliminate sandwich attacks.

Confidential Lending: Hiding specific health factors to reduce predatory liquidation games.

Institutional Rails: Executing block-size trades without signaling the market.

Private Vault Strategies: Sophisticated allocation without broadcasting every move to copy-traders.

On-Chain Credit: Proving a user meets credit criteria without revealing raw financial data.

The Takeaway for Builders

The goal of Confidential DeFi is selective disclosure: protect sensitive information while keeping outcomes provable and enforceable.
This shift aligns security, user protection, and institutional requirements without sacrificing the core innovation of DeFi: programmable, verifiable settlement. For builders, the task is simple: decide what must be hidden (intent, state, logic) and what must remain auditable (rules, proofs, constraints). The protocols that get this right will deliver fairer execution and safer users. Interested in developing these use cases with iExec in 2026 ? Check us out at
