The discussion features Jaron Lanier and Dr Ben Goertzel in The Reckoning of Control, the second episode of The Ten Reckonings of AGI, a public debate series released by the Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) Alliance. Rather than presenting a unified position, the episode highlights a fundamental philosophical divide over how society should govern increasingly autonomous artificial systems. 
Lanier delivers a firm warning against diluting human responsibility in AI development. He argues that social order, law, and morality depend on clear human accountability, regardless of how advanced or autonomous AI systems become. “I don’t care how autonomous your AI is – some human has to be responsible for what it does,” Lanier states, adding that assigning moral or legal responsibility to machines risks undermining the foundations of civilization. 
Dr Goertzel, CEO of SingularityNET and founder of the ASI Alliance, does not dispute the need for accountability in the present state of AI but challenges the assumption that humans must permanently occupy the top of a moral hierarchy. He argues that as AI systems evolve into complex, self-organizing intelligences, ethical frameworks designed exclusively around human agency may become insufficient. 
“Morally privileging our own species over other complex self-organizing systems is short-sighted,” Goertzel says, suggesting that future AI governance may require expanded moral consideration without abandoning safeguards altogether.

Despite their disagreement, both speakers acknowledge that today’s AI systems remain tools rather than sentient beings. Lanier stresses that large language models are not alive and should not be treated as independent moral actors. From his perspective, tighter human control, clearer lines of responsibility, and careful training practices are essential to prevent misuse and societal harm. 
Goertzel, meanwhile, focuses on how present-day decisions shape future outcomes. He warns that fragmented governance and weak institutions could lead to unintended consequences as AI capabilities accelerate. “If we had rational, beneficial, and democratic governance while advancing AI, we could do a great deal of good,” he says, cautioning that the absence of such structures increases the risk of loss of control. 
A central tension in the episode is whether accelerating toward more decentralized and autonomous AGI systems could ultimately reduce risk compared to today’s landscape of closed, proprietary models. Goertzel argues that decentralized systems, designed with participatory oversight and ethical training, may offer safer long-term pathways than reactive restrictions alone.
