On January 12, 2026, Vitalik Buterin proposed a "walkaway test" for Ethereum's sustainability. The proposal emphasizes achieving quantum resistance and underscores the need for Ethereum to function without core developer involvement for stability.

This proposal is a significant initiative by Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum. The test aims to ensure Ethereum can endure without ongoing changes, supporting decentralized and self-sustaining applications in finance and governance.

Mixed Developer Reactions to Buterin's Proposal

Community reactions to the proposal have been mixed. While some developers appreciate the focus on security and sustainability, others express concern over the absence of detailed funding strategies related to the test.

“This means Ethereum must reach a state where we can ‘ossify’ if we want to. We don’t need to stop making protocol changes, but we should reach a situation where the blockchain’s value proposition does not strictly depend on any features that are not yet present.” — Vitalik Buterin, Co-founder, Ethereum

The proposal targets fundamental Ethereum features like ZK-EVM for scalability, as noted by ForkLog, aiming to support decentralized economies without compromising stability. Historical trends show Ethereum's adaptability, yet opinions vary on the feasibility of Buterin's ambitious milestones.

Evolving Ethereum: From Merge to Quantum Resilience

Historically, Ethereum has undergone significant upgrades, such as the Merge to proof-of-stake, demonstrating resilience. The "walkaway test" lacks direct precedents but aligns with Ethereum's evolutionary nature.

Kanalcoin experts suggest the proposal could solidify Ethereum’s position if executed. By drawing parallels to past trends, experts highlight that achieving quantum resistance and scalability is key to long-term success.
