Starknet experienced an 18-minute rollback due to a proving-layer bug that halted the mainnet. Developers at Starknet patched the issue swiftly, ensuring no finalized transactions on Ethereum Layer 1 were impacted, maintaining the network's integrity.
Starknet, Ethereum's Layer 2, resolved a proving-layer bug on January 5, 2026, rolling back 18 minutes of activity to prevent any impact on finalized transactions. The bug forced a temporary halt of the network.

The Starknet team effectively managed an incident involving a proving-layer bug, causing an 18-minute chain rollback. The issue stemmed from a conflict between the execution and proving layers, halted operations, and required a network reorganization. As stated in the Starknet Incident Report, "The inconsistency between the execution layer and the proving layer caused a state conflict that required a chain reorganization."
Key stakeholders involved include Starknet's developers who released a detailed report on Starknet's official site, outlining the cause and resolution. No transactions received L1 finality, preserving Ethereum's state integrity during the event.

Minimal Impact and Future Outcomes

The incident's impact on the Starknet network was minimal due to the early detection of inconsistencies. Affected transactions merely required resubmission, preventing adverse effects on the broader crypto market or staked assets.
Financial implications remain negligible as no custodial funds were impacted, and no regulatory bodies had immediate responses. Starknet's commitment to architectural enhancements aims to prevent future outages and strengthen its rollup technology.
Potential future outcomes include enhanced network resilience and improved perception of Starknet's reliability. Historical events demonstrate the team's capacity for addressing technical vulnerabilities swiftly, maintaining stakeholder trust during incidents. Read original article on coinlineup.com
