Donald Trump has announced a proposal to cap credit card interest rates at 10% for one year. He shared this plan on Truth Social, suggesting implementation could begin in January 2026. Trump stated, "Effective January 20, 2026, I, as President of the United States, am calling for a one year cap on Credit Card Interest Rates of 10%." source
This proposal involves Trump using executive powers to introduce a national cap. It highlights potential changes to consumer credit regulations in the United States.

Trump’s suggestion aims to prevent high-interest charges by lenders, promising to tackle rates of 20-30% or more. The immediate response from financial markets remains speculative, given the proposal's future implementation.
Potential impacts include changes in bank profitability and credit availability. Historical trends show such caps could lead to tighter credit conditions for higher-risk borrowers.

Interest rate caps, similar to Trump's proposal, have precedents in state-level laws, particularly for payday lending. However, a nationwide presidentially-imposed credit card APR cap is unprecedented.
Experts from Kanalcoin suggest that prior caps on financial products affected banking margins and lending spreads. The crypto sector currently cites no direct official responses to this potential policy change.
