What Drove Canton Coin’s Weekly Surge?
Canton Coin climbed about 27% over the past week, outperforming a flat-to-weaker crypto market as traders responded to fresh signs of institutional adoption. The move followed a Dec. 17 announcement from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation outlining plans to tokenize a portion of US Treasury securities on the Canton Network. The timing mattered. While Canton Coin advanced, most large-cap assets drifted lower. Bitcoin and Ether slipped around 0.5%, BNB fell close to 0.9%, and Solana dropped more than 3%, according to CoinGecko data. Against that backdrop, the rally stood out as a trade tied less to market beta and more to infrastructure news. DTCC runs the core post-trade plumbing of US securities markets. Its subsidiaries processed about $3.7 quadrillion in securities transactions last year. When an institution of that scale discusses moving Treasury settlement onchain, traders tend to pay attention—not only to the network involved, but also to the token that underpins it.

Canton Coin’s move was driven by infrastructure adoption, not retail speculation. Price action linked to settlement rails often behaves differently from broader market cycles.

Why Does DTCC’s Treasury Plan Matter?
DTCC said the initiative would start with US Treasury securities held at its Depository Trust Company subsidiary. The goal is to explore how tokenization can fit within existing market structures rather than replace them outright. Frank La Salla, DTCC’s chief executive, framed the effort as a longer-term build rather than a one-off pilot. He said the “collaboration creates a roadmap to bring real-world, high-value tokenization use cases to market, starting with US Treasury securities and eventually expanding to a broad spectrum of DTC-eligible assets.” That wording matters for institutional markets. US Treasurys sit at the center of global finance, used as collateral, liquidity buffers, and settlement instruments across banks, funds, and clearinghouses. Tokenizing even a slice of that market introduces onchain rails into parts of finance that have traditionally relied on batch processing and multi-day settlement. The Canton Network is built specifically for this audience. It is a permissioned blockchain designed for regulated financial institutions to issue and settle tokenized real-world assets. Canton Coin functions as the network’s native token, supporting transactions and core operations rather than consumer payments.

How Does This Fit Into the 2025 RWA Trend?
Real-world asset tokenization has become one of crypto’s strongest themes this year. Data from RWA.xyz shows the total value of tokenized real-world assets rising from about $5.6 billion at the end of 2024 to roughly $19 billion today, more than tripling in twelve months. US Treasury products account for a large share of that growth. Around $9 billion in Treasury debt is now tokenized, up from roughly $3.9 billion at the start of the year. These products appeal to investors seeking dollar exposure with onchain settlement and near-instant transferability. The largest example is BlackRock’s USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, which offers onchain exposure to short-term US Treasurys with daily yield accrual. The fund has grown to nearly $1.7 billion in assets. Other sizable offerings include products from Ondo Finance and Franklin Templeton, holding roughly $830 million and $798 million, respectively. Canton’s role differs from asset-specific funds. Rather than issuing a single Treasury product, the network aims to support the infrastructure that allows regulated institutions to create, move, and settle tokenized assets within existing market rules.

Tokenized Treasurys are moving beyond niche products. Networks tied to institutional settlement may benefit as issuance and volume expand.

What Are Institutions Looking for in Tokenization?
Tokenization appeals to institutions for practical reasons. Onchain issuance can widen access beyond local market hours, shorten settlement cycles, and reduce the layers of intermediaries involved in moving assets. It also allows assets to trade continuously, rather than pausing for weekends and holidays. Keith Grossman, president of crypto payments firm MoonPay, recently compared the shift to earlier digital transitions in other industries. He said putting traditional assets onchain would force legacy financial institutions to adapt in the same way digital distribution reshaped media. For now, most of this activity remains firmly within regulated environments. Permissioned networks, whitelisted participants, and tight compliance controls define the current phase. That makes platforms like Canton less visible to retail users, but increasingly relevant to banks, asset managers, and clearing institutions. Canton Coin’s recent rally reflects that dynamic. The token is not a consumer payment asset; its value proposition is tied to whether large institutions actually use the network. DTCC’s Treasury initiative suggests that experimentation is moving closer to live market infrastructure. Whether that translates into sustained demand will depend on how quickly tokenized Treasurys and other assets move from pilot programs into regular settlement flows. But the signal is clear: real-world assets are no longer a side narrative in crypto, and infrastructure tokens linked to institutional rails are starting to trade on that reality.
