Coinbase has decided to launch its own tokenized stocks service. The largest U.S.-based crypto exchange follows industry rivals like Gemini and Kraken into the prediction markets, allowing users to speculate on future events and trade tokenized versions of real securities.
The exchange declined to confirm specifics ahead of the official announcement. However, rumors of the new market expansion have been circulating since mid-November. At that time, tech researcher Jane Manchun Wong shared a screenshot of what appeared to be a Coinbase dashboard dedicated to prediction markets.
Prediction markets and real-world asset tokenization have been featured heavily in the news recently. The launch of the Edel Finance testnet is among the latest relevant announcements, aiming to capture traders in the tokenized equities market. Edel is a next-generation securities lending infrastructure designed to become the global lending, collateralization, and yield-generating network for tokenized stocks.

Why Coinbase Targets Prediction Markets

Coinbase’s latest expansion into prediction markets is only another step in the platform’s strategy to build an “everything exchange.” CEO Brian Armstrong has often said Coinbase plans to offer access to more than just cryptocurrencies. In a September post on X, Armstrong wrote: “We’re launching the first U.S. futures that give exposure to the top U.S. tech stocks and crypto at the same time due to launch on September 22.”
Tokenized equities and event-based contracts are increasingly popular financial services. Analysts believe that they will dominate investments within the next decade. In the past year, several firms, including Robinhood, Gemini, and Kraken, have expanded their tokenized stock offerings outside the U.S.
Coinbase is accelerating its market entry for two reasons. Firstly, it cannot afford to lose ground to industry rivals. Secondly, the crypto market is increasingly bearish, with many investors losing interest in the declining crypto prices and shifting capital into safer assets.
The only confirmation about the new Coinbase tokenized stocks service is that Kalshi will power it. The U.S.-based operator launched in July 2021. It offers a broad range of topics that users can speculate on, including economic indicators, sports, political, and cultural events. However, it is unclear whether Coinbase plans to expand its offer to include all these products.

If successful, Coinbase tokenized stocks will expand access to stocks and equities to a broader global audience. Coinbase has over 105 million users and an annual trading volume exceeding $1 trillion. Its presence in the prediction markets will benefit both investors and the digital economy.
Access to stocks will give users greater financial flexibility. However, it does not empower them to reach financial freedom. Various intermediaries, such as prime brokers and custodians still weigh the system down. Moreover, users face key limitations, including opaque pricing, long settlement cycles, and limited transparency.
Edel Finance aims to solve these issues and provide the missing capital markets layer that helps tokenized equities transition from passive representations to real financial instruments.
The Edel Finance ecosystem allows users to earn yield from lending tokenized stocks. This way, they don’t have to sell their holdings to draw down on funds. Instead, they can generate value growth.
Users can also use stocks as collateral to borrow stable assets and open on-chain long and short stock exposure.
Edel’s CEO, Andrés Soltermann, commented on the platform’s place in the market:
“Tokenized stocks solve the problem of access, but access alone does not create a functioning market. Without lending, borrowing, and short-selling infrastructure, tokenized equities remain static representations rather than productive financial instruments. Real markets require capital efficiency, liquidity, and risk management, and that is the gap Edel is built to address.”
According to the official Edel Finance documentation, the platform is built specifically for securities lending, not general crypto lending. Participants can use the native $EDEL token or bETH to buy tokenized stocks from major companies, including NVIDIA and Meta.

The Bottom Line on Coinbase vs. Edel Finance

Coinbase’s entry into the predictions market will open the industry doors to more participants and increase competition. Meanwhile, Edel’s emergence as a mainstream tokenization player will increase diversification across lending, borrowing, and collateralization. The platform will act as the “Aave for stocks” according to industry insiders, allowing investors to start earning yield on stocks that usually sit idle in their portfolios.
Andrés Soltermann summarized Edel Finance’s impact on the market:
“Exchanges bring assets on-chain, but infrastructure determines what those assets can actually do. Edel is focused on building the capital markets layer that allows tokenized stocks to function like real, productive financial instruments.”
