Robinhood (Nasdaq: HOOD) is increasingly leaning into stablecoins as both a core component of its financial infrastructure and a long-term growth opportunity, said Robinhood Crypto's senior vice president and general manager Johann Kerbrat.
Speaking with TheStreet Roundtable’s Scott Melker, Kerbrat said stablecoins have quietly powered Robinhood’s operations for years, particularly because of the crypto market’s 24/7 nature.
Related: Explained: What is a stablecoin?
“Crypto is a 24/7 business,” Kerbrat said.

“For us, it’s really important to use 24/7 rails. Otherwise you have a problem if you have to wait two or three days during a long weekend.”

Robinhood has long used stablecoins to settle transactions with market makers and liquidity providers, but Kerbrat said the company has gradually expanded their role after realizing they were more efficient across multiple systems.
Not only that, Robinhood users can purchase Circle's USDC stablecoin 1:1 without additional fees, he underlined.

Robinhood part of Global Dollar Network

Kerbrat also highlighted Robinhood’s involvement in the Global Dollar Network.
Issued by Paxos, the network's Global Dollar (USDG) is a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar that is designed to redistribute revenue among partners.
Kerbrat said, “It’s basically a stablecoin that is more fair in the sense that it redistributes all the revenue of the stable(coin) to the partners and the people contributing to the stable(coin).”

“We think that it’s going to be something that we are going to invest more and more.”

However, broader adoption of USDG at Robinhood hinges on regulatory developments, particularly how the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins (GENIUS) Act is implemented, he added.
It was on July 18 that President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law to regulate USD-pegged stablecoins.
Kerbrat said the legislation has already had a meaningful impact on the industry by signaling that stablecoins are legitimate financial products. The growing interest from large banks and institutions illustrates this.

Federal-level regulation will simplify business, Crypto VP says

Melker said many in the crypto industry now see the proposed Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act as the next major milestone.
Kerbrat responded that a federal regulatory framework would dramatically simplify operations for companies like Robinhood, which currently must navigate a fragmented state-by-state approach.
For instance, Robinhood can right now create a very complicated product which it can launch in one state but not in another, he said.

“I think having one federal level for the rules is going to really simplify things for the businesses.”

Even if the CLARITY Act stalls or fails to pass, Kerbrat said Robinhood plans to continue building. He emphasized the company’s conservative approach to compliance and its experience working with regulators across multiple administrations.
Still, he warned that prolonged uncertainty risks pushing innovation like more decentralized products.
During the earlier administration, crypto projects were leaving the U.S. for Europe or Asia.
“It will be really sad for the country to go back to,” Kerbrat said.

Understand crypto before proceeding with regulation, Kerbrat says

Kerbrat emphasized that meaningful progress on crypto regulation will require deeper collaboration between policymakers and industry participants.
“I just hope we can get all the parties to talk to each other, talk to experts in the industry,” he said and underlined that Robinhood spends significant time engaging in outreach, walking interested parties through how modern crypto system and decentralized finance (DeFi) function.

“Sometimes I feel like people are voting on problems without necessarily knowing the underlying problems.”

People should first understand crypto and then decide how to regulate it, Kerbrat said.
