Spanish police broke up a violent gang accused of kidnapping and killing a man to steal his cryptocurrency. The operation, carried out with help from Danish police, shows a growing risk linked to digital money.
The case highlights how criminals now use extreme violence to steal cryptocurrency directly from its owners.

As revealed, the investigation began in April after a woman walked into a police station in Málaga with a shocking story. She reported that she and her partner had been kidnapped in the nearby town of Mijas.
According to police, the couple faced an organized ambush by three or four masked men dressed in black and carrying handguns. When the man tried to escape, one of the attackers shot him in the leg.
The group forced the two victims into a car and took them to a house, where they kept them locked up for several hours. During this time, the attackers tried to take control of the couple’s crypto wallets.
The kidnappers released the woman around midnight. Her partner, however, never returned. Police later found his body in a wooded area. Investigators reported signs of severe violence in addition to the gunshot wound, confirming that the crime went far beyond intimidation and theft.
The killing marked a tragic end to what authorities believe was a planned attempt to steal digital assets through physical force.

Spanish police moved quickly to identify those responsible. Officers carried out six coordinated raids at homes in Madrid and Málaga. During the searches, police seized two handguns, one real and one fake, along with a baton.
They also recovered blood-stained clothing, mobile phones, and key documents. Investigators also recovered biological evidence that directly linked the suspects to the crime scene. Authorities arrested five people in Spain as part of the operation.
The case quickly expanded beyond Spain’s borders. Danish police worked closely with Spanish investigators and charged four additional people in Denmark in connection with the crime. Two of those charged were already in prison for similar offenses.
This reinforced the view that the suspects were part of an experienced and organized criminal group. Police said the operation showed how countries can work together to fight modern financial crime.

This case shows a worrying trend in the crypto world. Criminals are using physical violence to force people to give up access to their digital wallets. These attacks, often called wrench attacks, use direct intimidation rather than hacking software or exploiting online systems.
Such crimes have gained serious attention this year. They have made the crypto community focus more on personal safety and stronger protection. The cases also remind people that owning digital assets can carry real-world risks.
