What Did BlackRock Say About Tokenization’s Trajectory?
BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and COO Rob Goldstein say tokenization is entering a phase comparable to the early commercial internet, with growth already outpacing expectations. In a piece published in The Economist and on BlackRock’s website, the pair pointed to a 300% rise in real-world asset tokenization over the past 20 months as evidence that adoption is accelerating rather than stalling. “Ledgers haven't been this exciting since the invention of double-entry bookkeeping,” they wrote, arguing that digital records of ownership could modernize markets by cutting paperwork, reducing manual processes and allowing assets to settle instantly. The two executives described tokenization not as a standalone crypto trend but as the next step in a decades-long progression in how financial infrastructure is upgraded. Fink recalled how trades in the 1970s were handled by phone and settled with couriers delivering physical certificates. The introduction of SWIFT in 1977 standardized electronic messaging and compressed settlement from days to minutes. Blockchain, they said, was the next big leap — a shared ledger that allows market participants to verify transactions independently without relying on a central intermediary.

BlackRock is presenting tokenization not as a niche crypto experiment but as a structural upgrade to the bookkeeping and settlement foundation of global markets.

How Does Tokenization Change Market Structure?
Fink and Goldstein said tokenization allows nearly any asset — equities, debt, real estate or currencies — to live on a single digital record. This could compress settlement windows, cut operational errors and open access to assets that today are too illiquid or administratively expensive for most investors. “A bond is still a bond, even if it lives on a blockchain,” they wrote, adding that private-market processes burdened by spreadsheets and back-office documents could be rewritten into code. Faster settlement reduces counterparty risk, and smaller digital units allow users to hold fractional slices of assets that were previously out of reach. The executives noted that early adoption is strongest in developing markets where banking access is limited, but many of the firms best positioned to lead the tokenization transition remain in the U.S. They compared the current moment to the internet in 1996 — when Amazon had sold only $16 million worth of books and most of today’s large tech companies didn’t exist.

Where Is BlackRock In This Trend?
The firm is already running experiments. Its BUIDL tokenized U.S. money-market fund operates on public blockchain infrastructure and recently passed $2 billion in value, according to data from The Block. The company also widened its digital-asset footprint with spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, which together pulled in tens of billions in net inflows — $62.6 billion for Bitcoin products and $13.2 billion for Ethereum. Fink and Goldstein wrote that tokenization was long dismissed because it was “tangled up in the crypto boom,” which often looked like speculation. But as traditional firms examined the underlying mechanics, they found a technology that could expand the universe of investable assets rather than replace legacy markets. They described tokenization as a link between incumbents and “digital-first innovators,” including stablecoin issuers, public blockchains and newer fintech firms. In their view, investors will eventually buy, sell and hold all asset types through a single digital wallet.

BlackRock sees tokenization as an add-on to existing rails — a way to compress time, cut paperwork and bring more assets into investable form, not a plan to replace traditional markets outright.

What Stands in the Way?
The executives said regulators should update current rules rather than build entirely new categories. They called for clearer buyer protections, strong counterparty-risk standards and modern digital-identity systems to help ensure safe participation. Tokenization can broaden access, they wrote, but only if safeguards evolve at the same pace as the technology. Real-world asset tokens remain small relative to global markets, but the pace of growth — tripling in under two years — suggests that the shift is gathering speed. Whether tokenization becomes a core part of the financial system will depend on how quickly institutions adopt it and how smoothly regulations adapt. Fink and Goldstein said the next decade will resemble the early stages of the internet boom: small, fast-moving, and heading toward much larger scale as more assets move onto programmable digital ledgers.
