Greenidge Generation temporarily took its Dresden, New York, power plant and bitcoin mining operation fully offline after an electrical switchgear malfunction sparked a fire, the company disclosed in a filing on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Nov. 23 and activated automated safety protocols that immediately de-energized the facility, Greenidge said. The blaze was contained, and no injuries were reported.
The Dresden site, the company’s primary operating asset, houses approximately 106 megawatts of nameplate natural-gas generation capacity and hosts the majority of Greenidge’s proprietary bitcoin mining and co-location business, including machines operated for NYDIG.
Preliminary assessments indicate there was no material damage to either company-owned or hosted bitcoin miners located on site, the filing added.
Greenidge said it is working with utility partners, the local fire marshal, and specialist electrical contractors to investigate the cause, assess equipment, and develop a repair plan.
While the company said it expects to resume normal operations over the coming weeks, it did not provide a firm timeline for restoring partial or full services.
The shutdown affects both generation and mining activities at Dresden and underscores the operational risks involved in co-locating fossil fuel power and energy-intensive digital-asset processing.
The outage comes shortly after Greenidge secured a renewal of its Title V air permit from New York State regulators, an approval the company had highlighted following years of environmental scrutiny related to its natural-gas generation and co-located mining activities. The company noted the permit renewal in earlier quarterly disclosures.
Industry watchers also pointed out a recent, separate fire at a bitcoin mining construction site operated by Bitdeer in Ohio, reflecting a broader pattern of site-safety and construction risks for the rapidly expanding mining sector.
Greenidge said it will provide further updates as investigations progress and repair efforts continue, while regulators and local authorities remain involved in ensuring the site is returned to safe operation.
Investors and customers are monitoring developments closely for potential impacts now.
