A lack of privacy remains one of the most significant barriers preventing traditional financial (TradFi) institutions from fully entering decentralized finance (DeFi). According to the EY–Parthenon Asset Tokenization Report, “lack of privacy associated with blockchain” is one of the top hurdles cited by institutional and high-net-worth investors evaluating on-chain assets.
EY’s Global Blockchain Leader, Paul Brody, goes even further, calling privacy “the number one issue for enterprise users and for more serious institutional investors,” noting that public blockchains simply do not provide the confidentiality required for real institutional participation.
This principle encapsulates a multi-trillion-dollar opportunity, one where the right privacy infrastructure could unlock the next wave of institutional adoption and transform DeFi from a retail-dominated ecosystem into a global financial substrate.

What Are the Privacy Needs of Institutions?

For institutions, privacy is not a luxury, it’s a compliance, security, and competitive necessity. Without the ability to shield sensitive data, major financial players simply cannot operate in the transparent-by-default environment of most public blockchains.

Confidential trading strategies: Institutions need to execute large trades without revealing intent or timing to prevent front running and market manipulation.

Private balance sheets: Asset allocations, collateral positions, and internal liquidity must remain confidential to safeguard competitive information.

Private due diligence: When structuring partnerships or agreements, institutions must verify information without exposing proprietary or client-sensitive data.

How is the Blockchain Privacy Landscape Evolving?

The blockchain privacy space has evolved significantly as the industry works to address institutional confidentiality requirements. Several approaches have emerged, each with distinct technical trade-offs. Projects like Zama leverage Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) to enable computations directly on encrypted data, while solutions such as Inco implement Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), where sensitive operations run within secure hardware enclaves.
These approaches represent important advancements for decentralized confidentiality. FHE offers strong theoretical security properties but faces computational overhead challenges that can impact throughput and latency. TEE-based systems provide performance advantages in certain contexts but introduce hardware trust assumptions and can face limitations in supporting complex multi-party coordination scenarios common in institutional finance.

COTI’s Garbled Circuits: A Complementary Approach for Institutional Finance

COTI takes a different approach to on-chain confidentiality, implementing Garbled Circuits, a cryptographic protocol developed in the 1980s, and now adapted for blockchain by COTI. As an Ethereum Layer 2, COTI combines this breakthrough privacy technology with full EVM compatibility through its gcEVM, enabling developers to build confidential applications across a huge variety of use cases.
Where performance and multi-party computation are critical, COTI’s Garbled Circuits architecture delivers a unique profile: up to 3000x faster than FHE implementations and 250x lighter weight than alternative privacy solutions. This performance advantage, combined with native support for secure multi-party computation, positions COTI to address use cases that require real-time execution and complex coordination across multiple institutional actors.

Performance at scale: Designed to meet the throughput and latency demands of global financial operations, enabling real-time trading, settlement, and risk management without compromising confidentiality.

Multi-party computation: Natively supports complex contractual agreements, collaborative audits, and cross-party risk assessments, with data isolation and integrity guaranteed through cryptographic protocols rather than hardware trust.

Regulatory alignment: Enables granular data control and selective disclosure capabilities, accommodating regulatory requirements for transparency while maintaining operational confidentiality.

Developer accessibility: Full EVM compatibility through gcEVM means existing Ethereum developers can integrate privacy features without learning new programming paradigms.

COTI’s architecture represents a privacy solution purpose-built for enterprise-grade applications across finance, healthcare, identity management, and supply chain, sectors where compliance, performance, and multi-party coordination are non-negotiable requirements.

Summary

As the blockchain privacy ecosystem matures, COTI’s Garbled Circuits technology is emerging as a leader in addressing the need for institutional-grade confidentiality at the performance levels required for real-world financial operations. By delivering on-chain privacy that meets enterprise requirements for speed, compliance, and multi-party coordination, COTI is positioned to help unlock trillions in institutional capital flow into the decentralized finance ecosystem.
