In Pi’s early AI experiments with OpenMind, hundreds of thousands of these nodes were used to run image-recognition workloads on volunteers’ machines.</p><p>So, Pi isn’t starting from zero. It already combines a <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/explained/pi2day-could-change-pi-network-forever-heres-what-to-know-before-june-28" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">mass-market user base</a> with a globally scattered node network. Instead of one massive facility, they spread computation across many smaller devices at the network’s edge, including phones, PCs and local servers, and coordinate them with protocols and, increasingly, blockchains. Research on decentralized inference and distributed training shows that, with the right incentives and verification, large models can run across globally scattered hardware.</p><p>For that to work in practice, a <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/renaissance-decentralized-ai" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">decentralized AI network</a> needs three things: many participating devices, global distribution so inference runs closer to users and an incentive layer that keeps unreliable, intermittent nodes coordinated and honest.</p><p>On paper, Pi’s combination of tens of millions of users and a large node layer tied into a token economy matches that checklist. The unresolved question is whether that raw footprint can be shaped into infrastructure that AI builders trust for real workloads.</p></div><div id="explained-block--2"><h2 id="pi-to-ai-from-mobile-mining-to-an-ai-testbed">Pi to AI: From mobile mining to an AI testbed</h2><p><em>In October 2025, Pi Network Ventures </em><a href="https://minepi.com/blog/pi-network-ventures-openmind/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"><em>made</em></a><em> its first investment in OpenMind, a startup developing a hardware-agnostic OS and protocol designed to let robots and intelligent machines think, learn and work together across networks.</em></p><p>The deal came with a technical trial. Pi and OpenMind ran a proof-of-concept where volunteer Pi Node operators executed OpenMind’s AI models, including image-recognition tasks, on their own machines. Pi-linked channels report that about 350,000 active nodes took part and delivered stable performance.</p><p>For Pi, it shows that the same desktop infrastructure used for <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/learn/articles/proof-of-stake-vs-proof-of-work:-differences-explained" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">consensus</a> can also run third-party AI jobs. For OpenMind, it is a live demo of AI agents tapping a decentralized compute layer instead of defaulting to cloud giants. AI teams, especially in emerging markets or harder jurisdictions, get another route to capacity through a token-paid, globally distributed network.</p></li><li><p>Second, Pi Token (<a href="https://cointelegraph.com/pi-price-index" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">PI</a>) gains concrete utility as payment for verified work or as a stake and reputation for reliable nodes, pushing it closer to a metered infrastructure asset.</p></li><li><p>Third, a Pi-based marketplace could bridge <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/learn/articles/what-is-web-3-0-a-beginners-guide-to-the-decentralized-internet-of-the-future" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Web3</a> and AI builders by wrapping all this in application programming interfaces (APIs) that function like standard cloud endpoints, so machine learning (ML) teams can tap decentralized resources without rebuilding their entire stack around crypto.</p></li></ul><p>In the optimistic scenario, Pi’s community becomes a distribution and execution layer where AI models are served and monetized across everyday devices, moving at least part of AI from the cloud to the crowd.</p></div><div id="explained-block--4"><h2 id="the-hard-parts-reliability-security-and-regulation">The hard parts: Reliability, security and regulation</h2><p><em>Turning a hobbyist node network into serious AI infrastructure runs into some tough constraints.</em></p><h3 id="the-first-is-reliability">The first is reliability</h3><p>Home machines are noisy and inconsistent. Connections drop, devices overheat, operating systems differ and many users simply power down at night. Any scheduler has to assume high churn, overprovision jobs and split tasks across multiple nodes so a single machine dropping off does not break an AI service.</p><h3 id="then-comes-verification">Then comes verification</h3><p>Even if a node stays online, the network has to check that it ran the right model with the right weights and without tampering. Techniques like result replication, random audits, <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/explained/zero-knowledge-proofs-explained" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">zero-knowledge proofs</a> and reputation systems help, but they increase overhead, and the more valuable the workload is, the stricter those checks must be.</p><h3 id="security-and-privacy-are-another-barrier">Security and privacy are another barrier</h3><p>Running models on volunteers’ hardware risks exposing sensitive information, whether from the model itself or from the data it processes. Regulated sectors will not rely on a crowd network without strong sandboxing, attestation or confidential-computing guarantees. Node operators, meanwhile, need to know they are not executing malware or illegal content.</p><h3 id="finally-there-is-regulation-and-adoption">Finally, there is regulation and adoption</h3><p>If Pi’s token is used to buy and sell compute, some regulators will treat it as a utility token tied to a real service, with all the scrutiny that implies. AI teams are also conservative about core infrastructure. They often overpay for cloud rather than trust unproven crowd compute.</p><p>To change that, Pi would need the boring scaffolding of enterprise infrastructure, including service level agreements (SLAs), monitoring, logging, incident response and more.</p></div><div id="explained-block--5"><h2 id="where-pi-fits-in-a-crowded-decentralized-ai-race">Where Pi fits in a crowded decentralized AI race</h2><p><em>Pi enters a decentralized AI landscape already packed with compute networks, but its path stands out for how different its foundation is.</em></p><p>Pi is stepping into a field that already includes decentralized compute platforms and AI-focused networks. Some projects rent out <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/decentralized-gpus-to-break-big-tech-s-monopoly-on-ai-computing" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">GPU and CPU power</a> from professional rigs and data centers, pitching themselves as cheaper or more flexible clouds. Others build full AI layers, including federated training, crowdsourced inference, model marketplaces and onchain governance, tightly integrated with mainstream ML tools.</p><p>So, against all of this, Pi’s angle is unusual. It is user-first rather than infrastructure-first. The project built a huge retail community first and is now trying to turn part of it into an AI grid. That gives it plenty of potential node operators, but the core stack was not originally built with AI in mind.</p><p>Its second distinction is the hardware profile. Instead of chasing data-center GPUs, Pi leans on everyday desktops, laptops and higher-end phones spread across real-world locations. That is a drawback for heavy training but potentially useful for latency-sensitive, edge-style inference.</p><p>The third is brand and reach. Many decentralized AI projects are niche; Pi is already widely recognized among retail users. If it can turn that into a credible story for developers, with a network that has millions of reachable users and a large active node set, it could become a mass-market front end for decentralized AI. Other platforms may still handle the heaviest lifting behind the scenes, but Pi could own the user-facing layer.</p><p>In the end, Pi will be measured not just against cloud providers but also against these crypto-native compute networks.
