Figma’s strategic move into India represents a game-changing expansion that could reshape how developers and designers collaborate globally. As the platform sets up its Bengaluru headquarters, it’s targeting one of the world’s largest developer communities to transform from a design-first tool into a comprehensive product development platform.

Why Figma’s India Expansion Matters for Developers

Figma’s decision to establish a physical presence in Bengaluru signals a major shift in its global strategy. With India boasting nearly 22 million developers on GitHub alone, the country represents an unprecedented opportunity for growth. The company recognizes that 33% of its global users are already developers, but the real potential lies in converting the remaining 67% of Indian developers who still view Figma primarily as a design tool.

The new Bengaluru office marks Figma’s commitment to the Indian market, joining its existing international locations in Tokyo, Singapore, London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, and São Paulo. This move comes as India becomes Figma’s second-largest user base after the United States, with impressive market penetration:

Figma’s recent AI innovations position it against not just traditional design competitors like Adobe and Canva, but also coding platforms such as Replit and Lovable. The introduction of Figma Make allows users to generate working web applications from natural-language prompts, bridging the gap between design imagination and production reality.

Challenges in Figma’s Product Development Evolution

Despite rapid adoption, Figma faces significant perception challenges in the Indian market. Many developers continue to see the platform as exclusively for designers rather than a comprehensive tool for end-to-end product creation. As Abhishek Mathur, VP of Engineering at Figma, noted: “India has such a large population of developers who might not currently think of Figma as their tool, and that’s the thing that we want to change.”
