Russian cryptocurrency entrepreneur Roman Novak and his wife Anna, who had been missing for over a month in the United Arab Emirates, are now believed to have been murdered after a failed ransom attempt, according to reports by the Russian outlet Fontanka.The couple was last seen on October 2 near Hatta, southeast of Dubai, where they were reportedly traveling to meet potential investors. According to investigators, the couple’s driver dropped them off near a lake, after which they entered another vehicle and disappeared.Sources cited by Fontanka said the kidnappers intended to extort a large ransom or gain access to Novak’s cryptocurrency funds, but allegedly killed the couple when they failed to unlock the accounts. Their dismembered remains were reportedly found in containers near Fujairah on October 3.Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed on Friday that it had opened a criminal case for murder following the “unexplained disappearance of a married couple in the UAE,” though it did not identify the victims by name. The committee stated that Russian and Emirati authorities are cooperating to investigate the case.Fontanka reported that seven suspects have been detained in <a href="https://hash.media/hashdesk/eu-hits-russia-with-new-energy-finance-and-crypto-curbs/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Russia</a>, including three alleged killers, two from St. Petersburg and one from Kazakhstan, and four intermediaries involved in organizing the supposed investment meeting.&nbsp;Surveillance footage and mobile phone tracking reportedly traced the suspects’ movements from the UAE to Oman and South Africa before they disappeared.Roman Novak, 38, was previously convicted of large-scale fraud in 2020 and sentenced to six years in prison. After his parole and relocation to the UAE, he founded a crypto startup called Fintopio, claiming to raise about $500 million from investors across Russia, China, and the Middle East.Novak, who once falsely claimed to be a friend of Telegram founder Pavel Durov, gained notoriety in Russia’s crypto scene.
