Romania has declared Polymarket's crypto betting platform illegal, requiring local ISPs to block access, according to a statement from the National Office for Gambling.

The ban signals Romania's strict regulatory stance, with potential implications for crypto-based platforms seeking legal compliance in European markets.

Romania's National Office for Gambling has blacklisted Polymarket, classifying its platform as illegal gambling, and instructed internet providers to block its access. The decision aligns crypto betting with traditional gambling regulations, emphasizing legal compliance.

Key figures in this action include ONJN's president, Vlad-Cristian Soare. He emphasized compliance over innovation, reiterating that both fiat and crypto betting require proper licensing to be deemed legal. ONJN's official stance and updates can be found on their website.

The ban affects Polymarket's operations in Romania, potentially impacting user access and market engagement. It has also prompted a review of similar platforms' compliance with local and international gambling laws.

Despite regulatory challenges, Polymarket secured significant financial backing with a reported $2 billion investment from Intercontinental Exchange, highlighting sustained institutional confidence. Market reactions have remained stable, with no evident downturn in related cryptocurrency values.

Industry observers are closely monitoring this situation for broader regulatory impacts on blockchain-based betting. The decision follows a historical pattern of increased scrutiny on crypto platforms, similar to previous actions in other jurisdictions.

The potential outcomes of this regulatory move may include enhanced compliance measures across the crypto sector. Analysts foresee adjustments in fiscal reporting and AML practices, with likely shifts towards more structured frameworks globally.
