NVIDIA is doubling down on its Asia strategy, and South Korea is at the center of the move. The chipmaker plans to deliver up to 260,000 AI chips to Korean companies and the government. This deal marks a massive step in South Korea’s bid to secure AI sovereignty and independence from global tech rivals. The move also reinforces NVIDIA’s position as the dominant force in AI chip production after losing major business in China due to U.S. export restrictions. At the heart of the expansion lies NVIDIA’s new Blackwell architecture, the company’s most powerful chip line yet. It promises unmatched computing speed and energy efficiency for AI, robotics, and autonomous systems.

For years, China was a cornerstone of NVIDIA’s business. It once made up nearly a quarter of the company’s global revenue. However, trade restrictions have sharply limited the export of advanced AI chips to Chinese firms. That has forced NVIDIA to look elsewhere for growth. South Korea has emerged as the perfect partner. With its advanced semiconductor ecosystem and global tech champions, the country offers both market demand and technical sophistication. By delivering 260,000 chips to Korean corporations and government agencies, NVIDIA is helping build a domestic AI infrastructure independent of U.S.–China tensions. This strategy ensures the company keeps expanding internationally while protecting itself from geopolitical risk.

Samsung is leading South Korea’s corporate response to the AI revolution. The company announced plans to build an “AI Megafactory” powered by 50,000 NVIDIA GPUs. This facility will automate chip manufacturing for mobile devices, robotics, and next-generation semiconductors. Samsung will also collaborate with NVIDIA to fine-tune its fourth-generation HBM (high-bandwidth memory) for use in AI chips. This partnership could improve Samsung’s production performance twentyfold, according to NVIDIA representatives. Beyond being a customer, Samsung remains one of NVIDIA’s top suppliers, providing advanced memory components used in its GPUs. The collaboration will strengthen both firms’ competitiveness against Chinese and American chipmakers. It’s a clear sign that South Korea intends to be more than just a manufacturing hub — it wants to lead in AI innovation.

The Blackwell chip family has become NVIDIA’s latest crown jewel. These GPUs are designed to run the largest and most complex AI models in the world. They offer improved efficiency, greater processing power, and reduced energy costs compared to the previous generation. Global demand for Blackwell chips has been enormous, with orders coming from tech giants and governments alike. NVIDIA estimates that its current generation, combined with its upcoming “Rubin” chips, could generate a staggering $500 billion in business. In South Korea, Hyundai plans to use Blackwell GPUs for autonomous driving and robotics projects. SK Group will build AI cloud infrastructure using tens of thousands of these chips. NAVER Cloud, Korea’s answer to Amazon Web Services, is expanding its AI computing power with over 60,000 NVIDIA GPUs. These projects align with the government’s vision of creating a fully sovereign AI ecosystem powered by domestic resources but supported by global technology leaders like NVIDIA.

China’s Dilemma and the Politics of Chip Power

While South Korea welcomes NVIDIA’s full-strength AI technology, China remains in limbo. U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted that Beijing may soon be allowed to buy a downgraded version of the Blackwell chip, known as the B30A. However, experts warn that even limited access could erase America’s lead in AI computing power. According to a Washington think tank analysis, unrestricted exports could allow China to surpass the U.S. in total AI capacity by 2026. NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, has urged Washington to ease restrictions, arguing that China’s dependence on U.S. technology benefits America in the long run. But security officials fear the chips could enhance China’s military capabilities. As a result, the decision now rests squarely with the White House. For now, South Korea’s gain mirrors China’s loss — a shift that redefines the global map of AI development.

NVIDIA estimates that the global sovereign AI market could reach $1.5 trillion within a few years. Its growing network of national partnerships — from the UAE and the U.K. to South Korea — is part of a calculated effort to capture that demand. In Seoul, these partnerships are already paying off. Samsung, SK Group, Hyundai, and NAVER Cloud are not just customers; they are becoming co-creators in a new AI economy. By investing in domestic data centers and AI infrastructure, South Korea is positioning itself as a global hub for advanced computing. Meanwhile, NVIDIA continues to dominate the AI hardware space, recently crossing a historic $5 trillion market capitalization. As competition tightens between the U.S. and China, the alliance between NVIDIA, Samsung, and South Korea could shape the future of artificial intelligence — one chip at a time.
